Depends. Are we talking Bactrian, or Dromedary camels?

Transited it 15 times mostly as Master.

Having only just watched this, and given what has been said about the canal pilots, I guess in this instance when Virgil says "F.A.B." he means "Fags Aboard"?
A T2 podful should keep Lady P going for a while anyway.

A split decision, I think.

How much loss was there if all the ships eventually got through. I bet they still had to pay full price, even if they were held up for a few days.

I will concede some ships took the long route, so there is loss there, as well as damage to the canal structure.
This was what I was thinking too, when reading about the ship today.

Apparently it's been seized pending the payment of £900m compensation!

The biggest loss would be from (I imagine) perishable cargo and operating costs of other ships hanging round.

And would the fact the boat driver was a canal authority pilot not transfer the culpability somewhat?

Not entirely sure of course, this goes beyond my evening class day skipper qualification!

IIRC from the thread earlier the captain is always in charge no matter how useless the pilot

$900m claim

How substantiated does that have to be?
Surely once they've paid the digger guy the costs of refloating - everyone can get on their way?

How is this possible as surely they would have taken on a Suez crew that pilot the ship in the canal, So that means they are suing their own company who crashed the ship?

I've seen it from a coach on the road that runs alongside it somewhere between Port Said and Cairo! Looks odd, massive ships sailing through the desert.

Pilots advise whilst Skipper / Captain / Master retains ultimate authority and hence responsibility for ship and crew.

Wasnt the early blame on the wind? and in that recent summary report?

Many times when working on passenger liners for P&O. Always an interesting day, not much to see though. My ship was 24,000 tons, about the size of an Evergiven lifeboat.

Mykap would be better qualified to comment but she's what's known as a SuezMax i.e. just inside the acceptable length for the canal. She is also not far short of the beam that would exclude her passage in any more than 10 knot cross wind which I think is what that Tug boat owner was alluding to. Be interesting to see what comes out of the investigation. Just because you can doesn't mean you should sort of thing.

Bit awkward if the wind gets up above 10kn half way down the canal. I suppose they could always turn around & go back smile

That wouldn't be a sensible thing to try. smile
