Last of the current scheme (Chatham Dock) BA 747's left at Cardiff is due to make the short hop across to St.Athan today, to meet its fate at the hands of the scrappy, which will just leave the 2 retro scheme 747's left at Cardiff, the BOAC and Landor ones.

The original film was simply called "Airport" and was based on the novel by Arthur Hailey. It was released in 1969 but was not really part of the slew of disaster moves that started coming out later in the 1970s - starting with "The Poseidon Adventure" in 1973.

"Airport" is not a bad film at all. The Boeing 707 that ended up stuck in the mud and partially blocking the runway was later sold to Aer Lingus smile
Related story. B747, Chicago - LHR, diverted to Shannon because of bad weather at LHR. Attempting a 360 degree turn, left the taxiway and got stuck in the mud. First attempt at rescue was a van load of airport workers with...shovels. NO. After several hours and the disembarkation of passengers and crew the aircraft managed to power out.

An interesting day.

Is that G-BYGD? That was the first 747 I ever flew on.

An unduly harsh sentence.

Although Airport 75 was an OK film until Airplane came out and stole all the best jokes.

Airport is a good film if you can handle the concept of Dean Martin being allowed to fly a plane.

Never seen the whole of Airport 77 - think I saw the last thirty minutes once. Once was enough.

I have seen Airport 80 and all I can say is: Concorde - good; everything else - bad.
Airplane 75 does seem inspired partly by the original Airport and partly by the pilot episode of Thunderbirds. So quite fun if you're in the mood.

Well, it looks like that of the 3 retro scheme BA 747's, the only one that is representative of a BA 747-400 scheme, the Landor scheme one G-BNLY, is going to be the only one of the 3 to get scrapped - which is kind of ironic.

Its currently due to depart Cardiff on 4th Dec, for the 30sec short hop over to St.Athan for its appointment with the scrappy.
I've just read it's been saved and is to moved to Dunsfold on the 4th

Just read that we are going to be keeping the BOAC Jumbo in South Wales, looks like its going to St Athan then towed across the road to the old hangers opposite which have been converted into a museum and business park.

It may even end up on the patch of ground where they used to fire train on the Victors.

Edit

Just had a look on google earth as its been a long time since I worked on the base, and it does not look like large aircraft can get up to Picketston to the north anymore where the museum is, so guess its going to remain on site somewhere.

An old timer told me that many years ago aircraft could even be towed all the way over to LLandow airfield by a long since gone route.

Saw it in our school film society, probably circa 1976/1977.

We had some heavy stuff - Satanic Rites of Dracula, The Godfather, Magnum Force, The Wild Bunch, Enter The Dragon, Blazing Saddles, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Where Eagles Dare, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, those are the ones I can remember 40-odd years down the line.

Seen on 'Head for points' site

Virgin are offering a champagne starter and 3 course mean in the upper deck of their last 747 at 50.00 a head. Also included is a tour of the plane, cargo hold crews rest quearter flight deck and you can even have a picture of you sitting in the engine nacelle

50.00 FFS that is cheaper than a West End eatery

Limited tickets and IIRC it is next sat here is the blurb

Say goodbye to Virgin’s 747s with dinner, champagne and aircraft tour for £50!

Virgin Atlantic is putting on an exclusive farewell retirement event for its Boeing 747 fleet at Heathrow next Saturday.
With 747s disappearing from the skies, this could be your last opportunity to explore the aircraft. It includes areas not normally open to the public, including crew rest areas and the cargo hold under the passenger deck.

The experience also includes a champagne reception in the upper deck ‘bubble’ of the 747 as well as a three course meal in the comfort of your own Upper Class seat.

(For clarity, the aircraft is not flying anywhere – this is a hangar event!)

Tickets are £50 which is, frankly, unbelievably cheap, given you would struggle to get a champagne three course dinner in a West London pub for that price!

The event will be held on Saturday 12th December with several different time slots available. There are 50 tickets available in total at £50 each.

Tickets will be on sale from 9am on Monday 7th December from this Eventbrite page.

Due to Covid restrictions and social distancing measures there are only 50 tickets available in total, for several different slots during the day.

All proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the Trussel Trust, which supports a network of food banks.

What’s included?
The experience is a three hour event at Heathrow and includes:

Champagne reception on the 747 upper deck
Three course a la carte meal in Upper Class
Full aircraft tour, including cockpit, crew rest areas, cargo hold etc
Opportunity to speak to Virgin Atlantic pilots, cabin crew and engineers including Yvonne Kershaw, the first female pilot to Captain the Boeing 747
Opportunity to get your photo taken sitting inside one of the jet engines!
For anyone who doesn’t get tickets, Rob and I will be attending a press event on Friday and are hoping to live-blog the event on our Instagram page. We will update you closer to the time when that will be happening!

They could easily have charged five times that amount.
