There are about 20 pages of stuff in the link - interesting debate.
Can we round it up as "Dont drive a T55 Russian tank in front of either in a desert?"

Or be in a Challenger when another Challenger mistakes you for a T55 in a desert.

People are often surprised when I say I passed my Chieftain driving test a year before my car test. I was 17 when I was at Catterick, heres a pic of me out on the moors from about March 1988.

More old Chieftains taken at the same time & place

Unusual shot, taken from the drivers cab of a Chellenger 1 when we were on exercise at Sennelager, Germany.

These arn't really amazingly cool pics of tanks but hey ho, not many people have seen them! Good old days tank

This thing is pretty cool:

I kinda wish I'd taken photo's when we were at the museum now. Anyway it's the only one left with a particular design feature to the way it's welded together.

Sherman Tank, Saipan. Recently.

(And since it's a Tank thread)

Kelly - Any other secret weapons?

Oddball - Oh, yeah. All the tanks we come up against are bigger and better than ours. So that all we can hope to do is like scare them away. This gun is an ordinary 75 millimetre......but we added a piece of pipe onto it and the Krauts think......maybe it's a 88 millimetre. We got our own ammunition. It's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes pretty pictures. It scares the hell out of people. We got a loudspeaker. When we go into battle, we play music very loud. It kind of......calms us down.

Good thread!

I`m half way through `Armoured Farmer` by Malc Cleverly, pretty good read about life in the RTR during the cold war.

Nah, construction looks like Third Reich.

I think it's this:

Panther 2 Narrow turret prototype.

When? AFAIK the only blue on blue was a Chally2 attacking another Chally2

From wiki: # A friendly fire ("blue-on-blue") incident on 25 March 2003 in Basra in which one Challenger 2 of the Black Watch Battlegroup (2nd Royal Tank Regiment) mistakenly engaged another Challenger 2 of the Queen's Royal Lancers after detecting what was believed to be an enemy flanking manoeuvre on thermal equipment. The attacking tank's second HESH round hit the open commander's hatch lid of the QRL Tank sending hot fragments into the turret that caused an explosion of the stowed ammunition, destroying the tank and killing two crew members. It remains the only Challenger 2 to be completely destroyed on operations.[10]

I wasn't stating a real incident, just a warning smile

  • Powerpacks - M1A2 much faster and better P2W thab Chally. Chally more reliable, and easier to work on, and better range.
Abrams fuel usage is horrendus. Apparently if you top the tank up to the brim with the engine running you can actually see the fuel level falling. Massive amount of power though, they're gas turbine.

There was an exercise we did around 1989 where at the time A squadron were still with Chieftains, B,C & D squadron were using Challenger 1. At one point in the 2 week exercise there were more Chieftains on the road than Challys in the other squadrons, we were just breaking gearboxes every day. As the engine & gearbox comes out as one unit (known as 'the pack') some squadrons were at less than half strength due to unreliability.

They said afterwards it was down to dirty biscuits (big main engine air filter) & drivers then had to bang the dust out each evening.

No one had any engine problems just gearbox so why the engine air cleaner had anything to do with it I don't know! Also a point on being easier to work on, with a Chieftain you could actually work on it & fix it, with Chally if there's any probs with the pack then it was a pack change & it would be repaird back at base workshops so in the field you'd never really work on it.

Anyway, Chally 2 has a completely different gearbox to Chally 1 so I guess they are a lot more reliable now.

Edit to say I thought I had a pic, heres a Chally 1 pack, on the way back to base workshops, another pack change!

Now thats what you call a turbo, theres another one on the other side as its a V12. Beautiful! biggrin
