And if you want cold hard personal accounts of the bombing campaign read Kevin Wilson's RAF bombing campaign trilogy – 'Bomber Boys' (there's another book of this title which I've not read) 'Men of Air', and 'Journey's End'.
If you fancy something a bit more recent (though not much thinking about it!) Mark E Berent has written a few VietNam air war stories. As an F4 pilot in "'Nam" he was highly decorated. Personally found his books a bit 'american' in style and not to my taste, as opposed to the previously mentioned Chickenhawk which is every bit as good as everyone has mentioned.
Pierre Clostermann's 'The Big Show' – shocking attrition in the Spitfire and Tempest squadrons, right up to the end.

From the Vietnam War Mark Berents novels are excellent. He fought in the war so it's straight from the horses mouth. Start with Rolling Thunder.
