Are any airlines actually any good and safe?
It's an industry I know nothing about but I'm assuming they are run much like any normal business is these days, eg short-term appeasement of shareholders dictates everything, leading to cost-cutting, reduced quality of service and lower quality 'product' in the name of quarterly profit?
That can't be good for an airline, can it?

I know a chap who works in aircraft maintenance. He was in Malaysia a few years back and claims the staff had confused psi and bar when inflating an aircraft tyre. Don't know how true it was. It's an industry I know nothing about but I'm assuming they are run much like any normal business is these days, eg short-term appeasement of shareholders dictates everything, leading to cost-cutting, reduced quality of service and lower quality 'product' in the name of quarterly profit?

Sort of. There's a big divide though, between government subsidised carriers and plc carriers. It's an industry I know nothing about but I'm assuming they are run much like any normal business is these days, eg short-term appeasement of shareholders dictates everything, leading to cost-cutting, reduced quality of service and lower quality 'product' in the name of quarterly profit?

Hence the middle east carriers are romping away in the satisfaction stakes, whereas BA et al are suffering badly.
For example, I find the standard of service on Etihad to be far better than BA, and I used to be a BA gold member (oooh err). Now, I fly Etihad anywhere I can.

Interesting, thanks.
The reason I ask is that I'm booking a Honeymoon soon and my choice of carriers is basically between KLM and Etihad (although the final stage of Etihad is operated 'in partnership' with Garuda Indonesia).
Now, KLM gets top marks for safety but less so for product. Etihad gets top marks in both but Garuda Indonesia only gets 3 stars for safety. Slightly worrying and introduces an additional stage for potential loss of luggage I guess, so perhaps KLM is the best option. I did fancy Etihad though.

Indonesia has a terrible reputation for safety. Most of their airlines are on black-lists and can't fly to Europe or the USA. Garuda has got its act together a bit recently with new metal but personally I'd still avoid them if it were an option. Your "in partnership" is probably a code-share agreement and at a guess I'd say your final leg will be on Garuda metal, particularly if it's a non-intl smaller airport.

You raise an interesting question: it's still Etihad's name on the ticket, and therefore, ultimately their responsibility to get you to your destination without dying in a fire ball. I wonder what checks they carry out to ensure passenger safety etc, given the apparent chasm in operating budget/profit margins? All that jazz said:

Yes, that was my reading of it too, hence my erring toward KLM...I noticed a lot of the internal flights say they aren't allowed to carry EU passengers, worryingly! Presumably for the same safety reasons. Awful really. How do they find that acceptable??
Seems to me that things must get a bit difficult to understand and control if the aircraft keeps automatically changing the flap settings.
Just at the point the pilot thinks he has things under control the flap settings change and completely screw the control inputs the pilot has established.

After the pilots -1g push-over/bunt there's no mention of any further stick/throttle/pedal inputs from either of the crew which I find highly unusual in that situation. Maybe the full report will give extra info as to the recovery actions they carried out, if any?

Could it be that they were not wearing belts and were thrown from their seats?Edited by IanH755 on Tuesday 21st March 14:20
