I was looking around portsmouth on Google Maps and found this http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=submarin... moored up at the very end of the harbour next to the Warrior. Any idea what it is? I don't think it's a Nuc as they are normally moored up the other end of the harbour as that's the designated nuke "area".

I'm a bit more concerned how the aircraft carrier got in there, and how will it get out?

Easy wink It's mothballed. When the time comes for it to have it's turn on active duty/refit, they flood the basin, open the gate (it just LOOKS like a wall) and it sails out smile It confused me the first time I saw it too, but from ground level it makes more sense.

No idea, but it's where visiting ships seem to moor.

cant ID it but this was over a year ago that the photo was taken.
the CVS can easily fit through the lock gates. Thats the Invincible currently being used for spares.

No idea but interesting to see how much bigger that T45 front end is than the T23 in the dry dock next to it! Damn you, I have work to do rather than peer at images of docks....

Have they nicked it's props? They seem to be sitting on the flight deck yikes

There is some amazing detail on those images, you can even see flags on the T23s to the north let alone how many VLSWs they have in the silos.

It'll be a type 42 next to the 23's - we don't have a Type 45 in Portsmouth yet, it's coming in the end of the month (I'll be able to see it from the window).

I don't think it's a Trafalgar for 2 reasons - firstly, look at the rear fins. They're X shaped rather than + shaped like the Trafalger.

Secondly, as I say, Nuke powered boats aren't normally down that end, they're up the other end as that's the designated parking area, which is why when the LA class sub was in a little while ago they parked it up there. smile

yeah props come in handy, easier to take off when in dry dock. you should see the nut that holds them on!

bit strange that photo, some of the ships have dress ship flags on suggesting an important day/ VIP visit.

i cant remember the last time i saw a brit sub in pompey so that might suggest its a yank one.

I would say maybe Meet the Navy but there was a lot more ships in including a carrier with an F35 mockup on, and obviously lots of people...

I remember walking under the Ark when it was in dry dock with my old man when he was in - I can remember the props being massive, I can't say I noticed the nut..

They'll have to have a Brit Nuke boat in once a year at least to maintain their nuclear rating - Southampton had the Trafalgar in a few weeks ago for that very reason because my housemate was assigned to guard it (He's MDP)

It's worth taking the boat tour of the Navy docks in Portsmouth if you're ever down that way visiting the Victory. It's only up close to an aircraft carrier that you realise just how bloomin big it is.

Go due south from the carrier, is that not a T45 bow on the barge?

It's also worth hopping on the ferry to Gosport and visiting the Submarine Museum - it's surprisingly good.

Plus they have this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland_1[/url] and t...

You can walk around both and the tour of the Alliance is particularly good. Get in quick before it's gone forever as I'm still unconvinced they'll get the funding to repair the pidgeon damage.

Incidentally, my old man was on the working party that originally put the alliance up on it's stilts - it's quite an odd site as you come over the bridge to see a submarine right in front of you about 20 feet out of the water!

Ooh, well spotted that man! What is that to the west of it though - it looks almost like a 23 but the guns all wrong!
