Idea from the current fatties thread..

Bread roll, bun, bap, down south where I live,

Barmcake or Barm in Manchester, although they wont look at you like you have two heads if you call it a roll etc. in my experience

breadcake, dunno where thats from

Oddest I've heard so far is "Batch" in Coventry, even labelled as batches in the shops, seems restricted to Cov only, 4 years of having the Cov born-and-bread GF living down south with me she still wont stop calling them batches, even though everyone down here thinks she's gone mental and has no idea what the hell she's on about..

Any other local odd names for bread rolls, or anything else for that matter...

i take it you meant my post?

a roll is a finger shaped bread, not round which is what i assume we're talking about.

breadcake is yorkshire, which is what i call them when asking for one in a shop/chippy. bap seems pretty much universal and is what i use when elsewhere in the country.

i thought a cobb was triangular? and things like a stottie are a type of bread aren't they?

PH - starchy carbohydrate based foodstuffs matter. its not just pies you know

If any foreigners are reading this I'd like to clarify a point.

There are subtle colloquial differences in how we refer to simple bread rolls in the UK.

In addition to this already confusing situation we have regional differences in actual types of bread roll available.

If you are unsure what you want please feel free to walk into any bakery in the land and politely ask the sales assistant if you could please have a quick look at her baps.

This, please be sure to have someone recording the exchange so it can be posted on the Internet as an example of how friendly bakers are in the UK.

a teacake is a sweeter bread with currants in. can also be slightly spiced like a hot x bun. for breakfast purposes.

i should become a baker.

My missus is from Leicester and she's always going on about crusty cobs or whatever they are. They may be triangular for all i know. I'm not sure of the exact size and dimensions of said cob ( or cobb ). All i know is that they can be crusty, as mentioned above.

Depends on the type of bread stuffs in question.

Rolls are finger shaped and are what is used for hotdogs

Baps are large and floury biglaugh

Cobs are smaller buns with a crusty top (ie coated in milk or egg before baking)

Buns are covered in seeds and usually come with burgers.
