What I'm confused about here is what was the size of the 'nose'. If the offender in the OP took a nose that left just a 1cm slice of rind behind I could appreciate the ire, but assuming the nose still left a decent amount of what I will call 'mid-cheese', then what is the issue?

This thread is just getting tedious now.

Some people are so obsessed with their "so sodding what?" inverse-snobbery that they are simply missing the point. Or, rather, the chip on their shoulder is such that they simply *won't* get the point.

People are saying that it doesn't matter and it's "only cheese". Yet, given this is PistonHeads, would probably be up in arms if someone said "it's only a car" if their Pride and Joy were damaged.

The fact is that someone took the best bit for themselves. Whether deliberately or through ignorange (and the fact that the OP said the person in question looked smug about it suggests the former, which could be why he was so upset), it doesn't alter the fact that it's a selfish act.

"The best bit"...

How many could really tell the difference, in a blind tasting, between a bit of blue cheese from the middle compared to a piece from the edge?

It is as bad as those who claim he shape of a wine glass substantially changes its taste.

Heh.

Well said, you summed up what I've been thinking for the last few pages.

Now you are just showing yourself up. Nobody thinks the shape of the wine glass changes the taste, rather it allows the drinker to enjoy the bouquet which is captured in a big rounded glass. Similarly a tall glass allows one to enjoy the aesthetic of bubbles in a Champagne.

I think if it were something other than Stilton, and a supposedly posh phrase such as "Nosing the Stilton" wasn't used, they'd understand it perfectly, and would be first in with a "WTF do you think you're doing?" if it were a cake or something.

Beats me how sharing something out fairly is somehow stuck up and makes me an oddball? confused

So what? If your palate is such that you can't tell the difference, why not steer clear of what others consider to be best bit whether they can or can't tell the difference.

What a 'dog in the manger' attitude. "I can't tell the difference, so fk you I'll have all of what may or may not be the best bit anyway".

Quite. It simply doesn't matter whether the nose is or isn't the best bit. The simple fact that some people think it is means you don't take it all for yourself.

This seems brain-numblingly obvious to me but seemingly is Advanced Mathematics to some people.

Sadly I have had wine bores professing the incredible ability of a certain wine glass enhancing the tasting experience.

Since, as you must be aware, the olefactory response plays a massive part in the sensations associated with 'taste' and 'flavour' you must concede that bouquet is a significant contributor to a wine's taste.

Surely you were taught all this as a boy in the same lessons as 'port passing' and 'cheese nosing'?

hehe

I have a solution to the "Cheese Wars"

Why don't they mash up the cheese so that everybody gets the same amount of good cheese and notgood cheese.?

It would be a socialist cheese.

And once it has been mashed up we could perhaps store it in tubes?

I really don't know why nobody has considered this before.

At last - the phrase "smell my cheese!" makes sense.
