ALDI & LIDL Food and Drink Worth Trying?
Discussion
I've found each supermarkets has its strength and weaknesses. As I have worked in a chicken factory all chicken from the same place goes to all supermarkets they only difference is a some welfare standard and aesthetics. welfares birds are used by Waitrose and M&S predominately.
I don't know about over meat or veg but there is a massive range of suppliers, I find the co-op has a lot of tasty products from ethical sources as well.
Aldi and lidl seem to have focused on some products and bought them up to a very good standard but a lot is standard euro fare.

The euro aside is I think important. A lot of Lidl's offerings are generic throughout their massive mainland presence where shops that sell ste food close. The French/Italian/Spanish etc etc are just that wee bit fussy about what's in their nosebags !!I don't know about over meat or veg but there is a massive range of suppliers, I find the co-op has a lot of tasty products from ethical sources as well.

Hommus, it's in the chilled cabinet with sandwich fillers and Colslaw. Fresh veg, their 49p specials are good. Fruit Juice good, I know some will dissaprove but their chilled and frozen jumbo prawns and their frozen Salmon Wellington are good. And their Rib Eye and other 28 day steaks are good for what you pay.
Chilled processed meats like ham, beef, and the german meats and Smoked German/Spanish Serrano type hams slices I like.
Sauces in jars and packets.

Interesting this as the LIDL we use most in France (Locmine)is nowhere as good as the UK for fresh meat they appear to source locally for each market. Even though the stores are bigger and newer than the one we have locally.I personally think it's down to the staff within the store. I'm pretty sure Lidl & Aldi in the UK just get deliveries into their warehouses with no chillers etc. Which means it is all about turn around from truck to shelf. Got a good team and a delivery at a quiet time = food quickly out where it needs to be and no chance for it to spoil. Some of their fruit/veg lasts half the time of other stores in my opinion. But meat etc, I think is great and is enough to keep me going back, I use the one in Streatham and the one on Acre Lane. The Lidl offering in Sweden, by comparison, is shocking.
Love saving money at Aldi. I've been on somewhat of a push and implemented a £2 rule.
Only buying stuff that's £1.99 or less now. Amazingly it's not that difficult. We've cut out the regular steak and booze that we bought previously. I think the only think that takes us over is washing tablets and the big bog roll packs.
I have taken a liking to the £1.49 stone baked pizzas. Really nice. For some reason the more expensive stuffed crust ones are pretty horrible.

We've taken to doing our weekly shop in aldi, well we have for the last couple of weeks mainly due to using their nappies for the bairn.
Weve used it for meat for a couple of years but we're finding if we top it up with local produce from the village shops & a monthly run to the cash and carry for bulk buying premium items we can get away with using it exclusively.
Good stuff so far;
Rib eye steaks
Their malted bloomer bread market the King of toast
£5 free range chicken, perfect size for 2 greedy adults!
Their kettle chips rip offs
Tomato ketchup (bramwells?) although different is actually nicer than hienz to me

Glad someone else has observed the short life time on fruit and veg in Lidl. Some stuff is OK, we find apples are pretty good, and broccoli too, not to mention when they have some seasonal fruit sold loose such as cherries, they were really good. But some staples eg potatoes, shocking, after the second bag which were wet and soft in a couple of days, never again. Also agree about the stores being different. We generally only use two stores, the local one and the one at Blackpole in Worcester as it's handy just off the commute route, plus about to upgrade to one of the new designs. The one in Kidderminster though, oh dear what a dump.
Aldi, lot less convenient due to location, so only go there for specifics. The one thing that grates with me in Aldi is that so many product lines blatantly copy the packaging of mainstream branded products, eg the mayonnaise copies Hellman's, yet is imo foul stuff, threw it away.

Lidl do source most stuff from local market. The chicken is from Faccenda which is in the UK - one of our customers. The fruit and veg will also be UK where possible, but some of the more interesting foreign food will obviously be product of.... LaurasOtherHalf said:

I like that tomato ketchup, seems less sweet than other brands, which suits meWeve used it for meat for a couple of years but we're finding if we top it up with local produce from the village shops & a monthly run to the cash and carry for bulk buying premium items we can get away with using it exclusively.

I dont know what you are finding wrong with your 'taters', but they are normally great, even the sweet 'taters' which are not normally as durable ..

BrabusMog made a general comment about the fruit and veg having a short life, my comment was some is OK, some is not. Maybe different suppliers in a different area. Maybe staff more diligent about stock control.
Eg Found some packets of cheese that were black with mould, some cooked meat that was green.
Having said that found mouldy caulis in Waitrose so, but being in farm shop central we don't buy in Lidl and much more vigilant about product date marks generally.
