Show us your whisky! Vol 2
Discussion
Well, that's my Macallan sold. I got £1700 in the end, which isn't a bad return for something I only owned for a week. Sold it via FB to a chap ten miles away, so no worries about posting either. I do think if the early bottles hadn't appeared on WH it would have maybe sold for above £2k, but I musn't complain. The next auctions will be interesting!
When's the next ballot?

A question for you with more knowledge than me... my OH has got me a stay in the Highlander Inn Craigellachie in January - and they do a deal where if you spend 50 quid per person at the bar on whisky, you get your night's stay for free.
My OH doesn't like whisky, so I have a hundred quid a night to get through. We're there for two nights. Yes, she's a keeper
The whisky menu is somewhat baffling if I'm honest, so I'd be grateful for a bit of guidance on what would be worth trying! Ideally a mix of stuff I could afford (tbh I baulk at paying more than 50 quid a bottle) along with some special drams I'd never otherwise try.
I've been off chasing bourbons for a while (sorry), but I have a Bowmore 12 and an Aberlour 16 I'm rather fond of and I'm pretty open minded in terms of stuff to try. They seem to have an interesting mix of Japanese whisky as well.

Any gems in there?

Yes there’s some really good bottles in there and as a whiskey novice you can easily spend £100 on stuff you’ll never (unless you get the bug!) buy due to the price.
To be honest though, I’d recommend the first night getting comfy with the barman and your OH and work through some good but reasonably priced versions from the different regions, a speyside, an Islay etc etc
Even though she might not like the whiskey you may find her pallet both helps and she might even like one or two.
From there on in, the world (or the bar) is your oyster. With a half decent selection like that you can experience a whole heap of decent distilleries and focus on what you like. For instance, an Ardbeg can be had for decent money and if you like it (an An Oa for example) and if you like it I’d try the Silver Seal at £35. Once you’ve done them you could try another in the range to see if the expensive one is worth it-that could see you doing £50 alone!
A lovely way to spend an evening and one I actually think is a better experience for someone who either doesn’t like whiskey, or doesn’t know much about it.

We went there for a drink in September. The owner is Japanese, which explains the selection of Japanese whiskies! Actually, he's a really nice chap, and really knows his whisky as well. They do 'flights' of whiskies now, where they'll give you a selection of six to try, say six Japanese, or six Speysiders, or whatever you want, all with varying budgets. To be honest, I'd say wait until you get there, and just tell him to give you something interesting and expensive! My OH doesn't like whisky, so I have a hundred quid a night to get through. This was one we did, I think it was called lesser known Speysiders or something.

Thank you both, very much. I'm looking forward to it!
You should do Point of note, if you can be bothered-take a picture of the ones you buy and make some very basic notes on why you liked the ones you did.
If nothing else, post up the results on here and tell us what you think

Looks like you might have done a Flora and Fauna tasting, as all the bottles are from that series? This was one we did, I think it was called lesser known Speysiders or something.
One that I don't think is on the list but should be there is a great sherry bomb for £7 (decent value) is the Highland Park Single Cask Independant Bars of Scotland. Have it later in tastings as it's big flavours. If that's not enough I tried the SCOMA Springbank 22yo (£28) to finish and it's a monster - almost black in colour. Maybe a little much wood to be perfect, but great to taste if you like the style. If the HP is too much don't try the SCOMA though,
Glendronach could also be good since you like Aberlour for big sherry flavours, if you've not tried them. Also they would be some "cheaper" ones to try to not blow your budget in 1 or 2 drinks! Macallan Folio 1 and 2 for £22 each looks decent considering the bottles are going for several thousand in auction I think. The Highlander is famous for their Japanese stuff - they have very strong links with Chichibu, hence usually having a few cool single casks in. If the Craigellachie 2017 Berry's is the one of the Dufftown whisky shop then it's a very nice dram for the price IMO. Some of the Clynelish could also be decent value most likely, but not tasted them.
Tatsuya is a great laugh if he is there when you are, and really really knows his stuff.
By the way, has anyone entered the prize draw for tasting Craigellachie 51yo single cask for free in London? www.craigellachie.com/bar51 if you don't know about it. Really cool they have made this open for free tasting the 51 bottles, rather than selling as super expensive ornaments as they would most likely become.

Glendronach 15 opened last night for a mate and his whiskey tasting vlog.
Not overly impressed if I’m honest.
In my quest to learn to enjoy whisky, I tried the 18yr old Glendronach on saturday night and really really enjoyed it. Not sure what it was, but for me, I didnt have any harsh after taste/ burn, very enjoyable drink. Not overly impressed if I’m honest.

Poured another tonight, a whole bottle of "meh" I'm afraid.
Well, taste is a subjective thing, and I know you're more a fan of peated whiskies, but I am surprised you're not keen on it. I haven't seen another negative review of it.My wedding anniversary was yesterday, so out for a nice meal then a couple of drams at home. I opened the Cragganmore 2003 Distillers Edition that I bought on my trip, and it was just as good as I remembered it. I do wonder if it would have been better bottled at something like 46% instead of just 40%, but that's being picky. Followed up with a dram of the WB Speyside - a proper sherry bomb smack in the chops!
I'm opening the Glendronach 15 this weekend so I'll feed back my (and a bunch of Germans) thoughts on it.
Oh and I've just had the food menu through for the evening detailing which whiskies they've been made with:
Whisky flavoured minty pea veloute
Caol Ila Moch
Scottish sushi
Auchentoshan 12 yrs
Raisins and carrot salad with a malty orange sauce
Highland Park 12 yrs old
Filet mignon of pork rolled in grain mustard and nuts,
black pudding flan with apple sauce
Knockando 12 yrs old
Whisky ice cream
Special Needs Glenglassaugh 5 yrs old
Whisky chocolate truffles
Bowmore 18 yrs
Fruit and nut cheddar slice
Aberlour 12 yrs
I must say I'm looking forward to it. We're making the ice-cream and other participants are each making a course.

Here's hoping! My whisky drinking pal who has similar tastes to me rates it highly as a daily dram.Watching the auctions, and saw this:
https://www.whiskyauctioneer.com/auction-search?te...
Glenfiddich Fire & Cane selling for £90 or so (auction ends tonight), yet it is available online from the distillery for £43 +p&p. Am I missing something obvious here?
It happens a lot. Either there is something properly dodgy going on for money laundering or something, or people order from other countries cannot get delivery from some shops, so have to bid more in auction that does deliver to their country. You also sometimes see a bottle that might be double the price of the same bottles in the same auction for some reason. I didn't get anything last night, and looks like tonight will also be nothing. It's probably a good thing after my Glenugie/Caperdonich/Tormore/Braeval shopping spree from Chivas. In addition next week we get a single cask Chichibu Norway-only release, so it's going to be dry pasta, and perhaps beans on toast as a treat, for the next month!
