Personally I would go charcoal, we don't get a huge amount of use from BBQs in the UK so when we do its nice to do it properly.

In the Med. where we use the BBQ much more I use gas because its quick and easy to fire it up for single things as opposed to getting a grill pan out and cooking it indoors.

As already said, Webber is difficult to fault and a very safe choice. Forget how old mine is, 4-5 years? and all I have done is upgrade the grill to a cast iron one.

Always charcoal, gas is okay for convenience, but it doesn't taste anywhere near as good.

After my father in law accidentally (he claims) destroyed my brick one a couple of months ago, I will soon be building another one and using the same grill as I can cook for 20 people with no issues on it.

If you're not up for building one to suit what you want, Weber are very good, but I also had a Barbecook (as it was about half the price of the Weber at the time I got it) and that was really good as well.

All I can say is a kettle. No brands mentioned just that you can do so much in it. And a chimney starter. That last bit will be the almost best bit you buy with a BBQ.

I smoke joints, meat that is, not weed, and fry and grill and steam...... then chuck in some mesquite chips.... heaven for food lovers.

As already said, you can't go wrong with a Weber kettle. Had various other BBQ's before and found I was replacing them every 2 yrs or so as various parts started to fall off. Had my weber kettle now for 6yrs and showing no signs of falling apart. thumbup

Have subsequently got a Weber Q and a Smoky Mountain. The Q is one of the best BBQ's I've used for doing steaks (nice cast iron grill takes about 15 mins to warm up though) and convenient for other quick cooks as it's gas - I do breakfast on it at weekends, bacon, sausage eggs etc.

But if you're going to have the one BBQ then the Weber Kettle is the best allrounder - Great for steaks, beer can chicken, leg of lamb, fish etc. Get a chimney starter and you won't look back! you can do direct or indirect cooking on it. with a little bit of effort you can even use it as a smoker for things like ribs yum so the worlds your lobster as they say.

I've got the Weber Performer series with the propane gas starter.

Best of both worlds. Charcoal with the convenience of a gas lighter.

Big Green egg. Yes they're expensive, but you'll only ever need to buy one. I use ours probably twice a week, every week. The results really do speak for themselves, and it can be used as a bbq, oven, smoker and pizza oven. Slow cooking of something like beef brisket or pulled pork is incredible.

Thread bump .... Out of the Weber one touch and the premium is it worth the extra £60 for the premium ?

Personally speaking. Better ash catcher and etc. Very easy to clean. Waggle the lever and the ash dumps in a little bucket you just chuck away as you want.

do you mean the master touch and premium? If so yes it's worth the extra althoughonly £32 difference here.

So I decided to go for the Outback meteor 6 burner and have to say I am very impressed , the lava rocks give good flavour and I honestly cannot tell any difference to charcoal in fact I think it tastes better, far more control so no burning, it is ready to cook in 10 mins with no faffing about. I got the smoker box but haven't had chance to use it yet. Mine came with swappable pizza stone, griddle and grill.

I have got a chimnea so I can still keep my Man status and make fire too!

What he said, the ceramic eggs are the way to go it does everything but there is better value for money out there than the green egg.

I went with A Monolith egg, all the taste of a BBQ and smoker combined with temperature control of an oven.

If you want a BBQ which will last I would recommend a Napoleon. Stainless steel construction - mine has been outside for 7+ years with no cover and still looks great. The trouble with Outback is they look great but made very cheaply. They rust and only good for a couple of years.

Buy once and buy right, good things aren't cheap and cheap things aren't good !

I tried mine like that and the stone just got too hot and burnt the pizza, I now use it with the plate setter to spread the heat.
