Oh I see, that triple fry lark.

Personally if i want healthier chips I peel and oven cook. Otherwise go down the chippy

But fair enough.
I do that if I want good oven chips.

If I'm in a hurry I find all the main brands much of a muchness.

because once you've peeled and cut the potato you need to heat a pan of oil to 170 degrees, fry the chips for around 8 minutes, take them out, cool them and dry them, then heat the pan of oil to 190 degrees and fry the cooled and dried chips for 2 more minutes. You then need to clean up the pan of oil (or leave it on the hob for 2 weeks until you next make chips)
No you don’t. 25 mins in an Actifry (compared to 10 mins waming up oven and 25 mins cooking) and you have a product that is far superior to any oven chips.

They are no more different to buying a microwave or a decent pan these days.

Rooster are definitely the best, IMHO.

I particularly like their fries, which have the lightest addition of paprika, which gives them a lovely Belgian/Germanic taste.

But even their crinkle and chunky chips are great. You must follow the instructions though; any deviation (esp. lower) on oven temperature and the quality diminishes.

I do tend to buy Rooster potatoes anyway, so was naturally drawn to the brand, but they're better than anything McCain produce, IMHO etc etc.

I was 100% against oven chips until I was recommended these.

Triple cooked McCain oven chips. They are coated in beef dripping and are fantastic

M&S do similar but are not as good
They are nice but your arteries feel that bit more clogged when you see the pan of congealed far afterwards is more than you'd get from cooking a pack of sausages!

Those gastro chips are good but as hotchy says get an air fryer and oven chips become excellent. Aldi Skin on are our favourites.
Another vote for the Aldi skin on chips. And I agree with doing them in the air fryer.

I'd rather go hungry than eat Albert Bartletts stuff. I worked there for a few shifts around 1999 and won't give them a penny if I can avoid it biggrin. The way they treat their staff was absolutely horrific.

Lidl Maris Piper deluxe oven chips for me have been the best i have tried so far, and they agree(best potato product) :

https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/the-grocer-own-label-a...

"At £1.95 for 1.5kg, these chunky chips were “stunning value” said our panel of experts. “Well seasoned” with “great taste”, there was a “good contrast” between the “crispy” outside and “fluffy” inside. Shoppers loved the “upmarket” look of the packaging and the “excellent size” of the chips - which they said were better than those from some leading brands"

I mentioned these back in the thread. Couldn’t agree more.

Agreed, we were treated to these at a friends house once and couldn’t believe they were oven baked

Put your oven chips in the air fryer. Changed the way I thought about oven chips being dry disgusting things.
Absolutely. Air fry makes them very nice.

And bhajis
And fish fingers
Ans samosas
And salmon
And breaded chicken fillets
I don't have an air fryer but I do have the similar Tefal Actifry. It's 'ok' at doing normal chips but becuse it rotates and mixes the food you end up half the chips you put in and a load of dried bits. Will frozen oven chips cook in this?

Good thread. I really dislike oven chips and have started making my own but I agree with the above comments in it being a protracted and messy exercise. Will try some of the suggested ones.

I’ve started making my own after far too many disappointing frozen ones. Chop the spuds, parboil for a few mins before mixing them about in a bit of olive oil and seasoning and chuck them in the oven. Mix them about halfway through cooking and job done.

10 mins of prep time but a way better chip at the end of it
