The Red Lion at Langthwaite was a great little time warp last time I visited - not sure if it's still open, Landlady was quite old? Close to the CB Inn.

And another vote for the Falcon at Arncliffe - when I first started going they served the Taylors Landlord from a jug and the Landlord was grumpy as hell in true Yorkshire tradition. His son took it over and it became a bit more civilised but still a great unspoilt pub and well worth a visit.

..and then there's the bit of the Dales that's actually in Cumbria - Dent, The Sun and the George and Dragon. Such a pretty little village, the G&D used to have it's own brewery and made great beer but I think it may have closed. Dent Aviator beer was a favourite of mine.

Been up to the Falcon a few times over the years (the original Emmerdale Woolpack!) used to serve beer straight out of the barrel.
Hes no longer there now but the old landlord was a bit of a character. Once there was a queue at the bar near closing time, he pointed someone out who for no reason he took a disliking too, and said ,'when we get to you we're closed' laugh

I've just noticed this and it's good to see your recollection is the same as mine! He used to have two barrels of TTL and fill a jug with a bit from each, I think it was a sort of primitive attempt at stock rotation. He had a hand written sign with every permutation of drinks order on and the price so he didn't have to do the mental arithmetic. No till or anything just a drawer for the cash. Hated cyclists, of which I was one, even though they were his main source of income.

Once, I went to the loos around the back and went past his kitchen window - he was cleaning his 12 bore at the scrub top table with an evil look in his eye, a real Roytson Vasey moment.

I hate to be negative, but the Tan Hill Inn is a grubby, run down hole. If it wasn't for its location (or the hype behind it), I'm certain it would be closed.
You certainly don't go to Tan Hill for a good meal.

I like The Old Hall just outside Grassington.
I used to go years ago and thought it was excellent. Will try again, thanks for the reminder.
If you mean Threshfield then hopefully it's improved since 2019/2020.
We used to go once a year, but it seemed to get worse and more and more run down every time we went until the last time when it was so bad we haven't been since.

Personally I would consult Tripadvisor.

I've never had a bad experience at the Boars Head at Ripley, but it's not very deep into N. Yorks.

I've been to the Tan Hill around ten times since 1974, yes, it has it's ups and downs and different owners, some needing to go to charm school, but I was there last month and had a nice meal.

The last time we called at Tan Hill the chef pushed past us and walked out in a strop. By chance we happened across The Inn at Brough, just a few miles away, where we (about eight of us) enjoyed an excellent lunch.

Thoroughly agree. Poor food, scruffy decor, indifferent staff and only average beer.

The CB Inn is much better and only just down the road.

The CB is generally quite good, but the manageress lost her temper with me once when we were staying there, maybe 5yrs ago now.
We'd been up at Tan Hill for a few, so floated back down, checked in and were starving. Both had a pretty poor meal, ate it as we were hungry, left part of it, but it was crap, then complained and she scolded me for not saying earlier.
They don't seem to understand you should not have to complain to get a good meal. It should arrive at the table edible the first time. If you send one back because it's rubbish then not only are you sat there twiddling your thumbs, but also you don't know what special additions the chef is adding on.

In defence of Tan Hill, whilst I wouldn't go there for a decent meal it does have a lot going for it and we've spent a few happy days there either sat by the fire or less likely, outside watching the world go by and the oddities that turn up there. I even proposed outside there and in an MX-5 too.

I do seem to remember the Old Peculier being a bit off when we we went there last too as yet another new landlord had just taken over. It's so remote, rugged, but famous and historical you kind of forgive it's short comings and the fact they only make money for maybe 6 months of the year (much like other pubs, esp' N.Yorks) and then lose or break even for the other 6 months.
I do know there has been a lot of work done to make it a better venue in recent years, more luxurious rooms, live bands etc, but you do wonder if they aren't flogging a dead horse and that the British pub is largely dead. Much like the local Library and before that the butchers the bakery etc.
I speak as someone who lives below what was the local 'Tan hill'. It's now houses.

I have the Tan Hill books, both the hardback of photos and the story of one of the Landlords 'The Inn at the top'.

I hope it survives.

When I was last in Dent, last summer 2021, sadly the Sun was closed and it looked as if it was permanent.

Hopefully it was just a post Covid closure and has now reopened.....

It is open (on and off apparently) but recent reviews are not good.

I was up to Tennants in Leyburn today to bid on a rather nice William and Mary chest of drawers in walnut and laburnum but that didn't go to plan so off to the Wheatsheaf at Carperby and a walk down to Aysgarth Falls.

The beer at the Wheatsheaf was good, Wainright's Golden and although we didn't eat, the dining room looked inviting and the snug with log burner was vey comfortable.

The young barman was from Venezuela. He'd found a job in Wensleydale through an agency in Spain. He'd arrived 3 years ago with no English and just got on with it. Now his English is excellent. smile

James Herriot honeymooned here... Greta Garbo stayed after entertaining the troops at Catterrick... If you're in the area probably worth calling in.
