what made you change? Better wine at the same price, or the same wine at a lower price?

Pieroth have a good selection - we get ours there too. Although in the old days, they used to offer to come out for tasting sessions a lot, nowadays you just have to ask for a session when one of their interminable marketing calls comes through.

Though I think I've trained them not to pester me during the day now, at least. wink

It's funny how i never used to like wine until I found a special offer flyer that fell out of the News of the World magazine.

Tip top I am.

Mine comes from my local shop.

Which is quite possibly the best local shop (IE only one around except spar in 10 mile radius)

It has top quality wines, beers, ales, ciders, cheeses, etc.

and the woman who owns it is also organising an Oktoberfest....get in.

A bit more expensive (don't think i've paid under £6 for a bottle), but IMO nicer wines.

Current favourite is a red called Kangaroo Point, awful cheesy name, but bloody lovely. They do some nice sweet whites too, not everyones taste but I've had a few cases and am impressed.

Give them a call for a tasting and get a few friends round, from memory there's no obligation to buy, and you get to try plenty, to find out what you really like.

My best piece of advice would be to taste as much as possible. If you gave me a specced up Omega for £30k I'd hate it, but if you gave me a £20k Elise I'd love it. Wine is no different. For example, I've tried countless wines from California, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, varying in price from £3 to £30 a bottle and I've hated all of them. However, I absolutely love French, Northern Italian, German and English wines.

Laithwaites, who happen to run the Sunday Times Wine Club. Their cheapest wine is 49.99 a case but add up to another 20 (that's only 5.80 a bottle) and you get lots of choice. Good new customer offers, often 2 for the price of 1. And the best call centre I have ever used.
We haven't bought a bottle from a supermarket for several years.

buying wine under a £10 rarely gets you anything special but once you break that barrier you start to find some special wines...the junior wines from world class producers

A lot of it is down to taste but I find the best bargains for reds are spanish and south african. Lower labour costs and not being in fashion can make a difference.

Good french wine is never cheap except in the south, stay away from bordeux and burgundy on less than a tenner unless you really know something the rest of us dont.

Not a great white drinker so less familiar with the bargains but Chile and Argentina are also great value but ignore the £2.99 stuff. By the time you remove the bottle, label, packing and shipping costs and the supermarket margin the wine costs about 20p

My local tescos has a fine wine section with some interesting stuff over a £10.

Oddbins is alway worth a look (nice stuff is on the top shelves)

forgot to add that local oddbins always has a 20% off deal on a mixed case which means that £12 bottle on the shelf is now less that a tenner.

Mixed cases mean you are never stuff with 11 bottles of something that tasted all right after 5 pints and a curry

If you want to blow the budget and ever get into london then wimbledon wine cellers and Philglass & Swiggot are great wine shops with branches in town

This is the best company I have ever dealt with (wine or not), I cannot recommend them highly enough.

They're up for an award in Decanter magazine. Ask for David, but everyone there is fantastic.

Best regards,

David

Thanks for the tip Dave

I've bought from Laithwaites and it was fine. I've bought from Majestic for about 20 years and have had some great wine from there and the managers are usually very knowledgable and enthusiastic. Don't knock your local supermarket though, Tesco's have a pretty good selection now.

Depends on your supermarket I guess. The selection in my local supermarkets is pretty poor, although the prices are good. Waitrose seem to do some good wines - my girlfriend has bought me a lovely Chateauneuf du Pape from there for my birthday.
