Does anybody not buy Free Range Eggs ?

+1 we have 3 'ladies' in the back garden who for the past few months have been laying at full capacity most days...compared to shop bought eggs the white's are much whiter & the yolks are a much richer yellow. Primarily all the food manufacturers and low-end "restaurants" and fast food joints. For example the frankly delicious Sausage and Egg McMuffin is unlikely to contain free-range goodness, nor are the fried delights within the ubiquitous Olympic down at the Little Chef. Ditto pretty much all ready-made desserts, supermarket ready-meals, I could go on. As bad as they may be for you, they're sooooooo goooood!

+1. Barn eggs are the cheapest I will go, but will more often than not get free range. Unless you eat a huge amount of eggs, over a year the extra expense of free range is not that great, and worth it knowing that you are contributing to caged farms turning over to barn or free range. HRG. said:

Couldn't give a stuff about chicken welfare, I just love the taste
And as I have found they are still cheaper than the crap peddled out by Waitrose..Couldn't give a stuff about chicken welfare, I just love the taste

McD's do use UK sourced, Lion Quality FREE RANGE eggs in their breakfasts
And Hellmans only use Free range eggs in their mayo. I think some time back Marks & Spencer changed that all eggs that were used in any of it's products would all be free range.
As for me, I have organic (free range) eggs, meat & milk delivered by a veggie box scheme (although I don't have the veggie box any more!)
I made that choice after seeing not only the piss poor animal welfare of battery hens (I'm not naive enough to think that supermarket free range are skipping in the sunshine, but it's better at least) but I'm concerned about the chemicals, hormones & colours which are put into the food chain

Yeah, always buy free-range if I'm not passing the local farm in the next few days when I will buy theirs instead.
After that programme on pigs I also now buy the British bacon rather than the Danish stuff as the programme revealed that there are some horrific practices still going on over there which are illegal in this country, can't remember what - think it was a type of farrowing crate/stall.
Have to be careful when buying and look for the kitemark though - some crafty folks called a product "Somerset Bacon" or similar and have a pic of a ruddy-faced English farmer on the pack but in the small print on the back it reveals its origins in Denmark.
Costs a fair bit more but is generally of much better quality and I'd prefer that if I'm going to eat something that it had a half-decent life beforehand.

Mine do. I have several thousand Free Range Hens with the ultimate destination of their eggs being the supermakets. It is obvious they do love being outside, when the doors are opened in the morning they just run out to the grass.I was suprised at the amount of grass they do eat, which, combined with insects etc darkens the colour of the yolk naturally.
Every egg I eat is only a day or two old which taste fantastic, one of the possible differences between supermarket free range eggs and those from folks own hens is that the time scale from farm to shelf may be heading on for a week.
I've read some of the replies with genuine interest, as I believe there is a place for both cage & free range. The welfare of Caged Hens is increasing significantly with the introduction of "Enriched cages" and phasing out of the traditional Battery Cages. Organic Eggs, in my opinion are a waste of time, and not sustainable. I've yet to figure out the point of Barn Egg's
