I do love a chicken and mushroom pie with a puff pastry top but a hot scotch pie that has sooo much greasy juices coming out of it you have to hold it with the paper bag the baker gave you the pie in just to eat it, so your hand does not get covered in fat. lick

Chicken and mushroom would be my 2nd choice.

I have no favourite filling for a pie.

My favourite kind of pie is a properly home made one.

Because it will cram-packed full of moist delicious filling right to the top,
and the pastry will not be overdone,
and there will be a good ratio of filling to moist, as opposed to dried out, pastry.

It will be served with delicious, fresh steamed vegetables.

It will come with a gravy that complements, rather than competes with the pie filling.

And if it doesn't? It will have been my mistake, rather than because the recipe was designed by accountants and made by monkeys.
Can I come to dinner at yours?

Humm.. it's a close call between steak and stilton and a good game pie.

Steak and Stilton wins though.

Don't know if you get these in Engerland but..

Potato and bean scotch pie.
it's a Scotch pie but instead of pastry on top it has piped Mash and beans.

Forfar bridie
Like a pastie but much thicker filled with mince and onion.

Chicken curry pie
Again it's a Scotch pie filled with chicken curry (think Chinese curry but very spicy).

A Stanforths pork pie from Skipton please.
Is that the one near the castle, on the bridge, down the dip, across from the pub? That one?

Magnificently overated if it is.
I respect your opinion of their pies as it's a very personal thing but as the question was regarding *my* favourite pie and not "which pie pleases the masses" I'll stick with my first choice wink

I'm from Skipton but I've eaten a heck of a lot of pies on my travels, I still prefer the Stanforths even though you don't get as much meat as you used to. It's an honest pie, good pastry without being all lardy like a Melton and meat that looks like cooked pork not something you'd find in a Barbie play set. I'm always happy to find another nice pork pie though so feel free to recommend others I should try.

Out of interest what was it about my pie of choice that you disliked?

Reading through this and musing about my favourite pie has led to me concluding that encasing a great meat fillings in good pastry is kind of unfashionable at the moment?

Unless you live in Wigan etc probably. As I have.

Which leads me to reminisce about my Mum's sausage and onion pie with pastry so short, sea level air pressure threatened its structural integrity. Served with simple boiled new spuds, cabbage and graaaaaavy.

A good quality Scotch pie ticks the boxes, as does (when pie slaggery matters) a Pukka Pies chicken & mushroom.

Game pie, it's the king smile

Failing that I'd have to go for either the obvious option (beef in ale), or the fantastic but pretentious (wild boar and cider with sage and apple stuffing - from a rural pub I visit now and then) both served with lashings of gravy.

As for Scotch Pie, gorgeous when done properly, but rarely is. Too many places punting too many crap ones out. Find a good one though and it's omnomnomnom cloud9

I don't think I've ever had a decent Scotch pie, maybe because I've only ever tried them from a supermarket.

What makes a good one? What would be the perfect scotch pie?

A homemade pie from Christmas leftovers... turkey, gammon chunks, and smoked bacon pieces for the meat, and some pea's, carrot and a couple of potato pieces to balance out the flavours. All with a lovely homemade gravy to top up the filling.

Serve with roast potato's and parsnips, with a couple of pigs in blankets if you're feeling particularly hungry.

Or just slap the bugger in a bap with some proper butter and a little bit of ketchup... mmmm pie bap... nom nom nom....lick

Interesting! What's the recipe?

Is that a Duck leg? If so - is it just the drumstick?

Fun presentation with the legbone protruding. It reminds me of Desperate Dan's Cow Pie...that had the horns sticking out! hehe

It depends

Buying

Butcher - Venison & Red wine
Baker - Chicken & Mealie Pudding
(Although there is a baker I know which does a Smoked Sausage, Cheese & Bean Pielick although it is too far away)

Making
Chicken, heavily peppered white sauce, button mushrooms, green beans & puff pastry
