OK, as lots of people seem to be looking at this thread I may as well post this here!

I need a new knife block for them. They came with a block but to be honest it's horrid and looks cheap. It's this set in this block

I want a nice wood/bamboo type block, ideally a much more compact one too but it needs to fit all the knives in it, and maybe a couple of extra ones too. Any ideas? Amazingly one of the knives is a bit of a tight fit in the supposedly custom designed block, on top of the fact it looks horrid!
Slightly O/T, but handy hint - store knives upside down in the knifeblock (i.e. with the edge facing up). Stops the edge of the knife rubbing on the bottom of the slot every time you take them in/out, so they'll stay sharp longer.

Yet another topic that could be solved by either reading the instructions that came with the product, or a quick Google.
Instructions are a combination of "how to do something" and the manufacturere "protecting themselves".

Learning from others experience is often more effective and useful.

Do you follow everything in the manual for your car? if you do then you'll drive like an old granny.

Nothing to do with them being 'works of art', the heat and detergent in a dishwasher can damage the type of steel they are made from.
How?
Ask Global!

Kitchen Knife Care

Washing

It is recommended that you wash your Global knives by hand using a mild dishwashing liquid and water. After washing, rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a towel. Global knives should NOT be put in the dishwasher. Doing so could damage the sharp edges should they come into contact with other objects in the dishwasher. In addition, exposure to extreme heat and powerful detergents found in dishwashers can be harmful to CROMOVA 18 high carbon stainless steel.
I can understand the issue with edges coming into contact with things and becoming dull, but the other stuff doesn't add up. Cromova 18 is only 18/10 under a different name, the heat in a dishwasher will never be more than 100 degrees so not enough to affect the temper.

I couldn't really understand it either. What happened to mine was a couple of tiny rust spots appeared between the handle and the blade, and then it just snapped off whilst crushing some garlic. It was about 12 months old. The replacement has never been through a dishwasher and is knocking on for 5 years old. Maybe the first one was just defective but my experience certainly confirms what Global say.

Whether or not there is any validity in Global's claims, for the sake of a few seconds under a running tap with a sponge, I'll continue to wash by hand. My knives are ten years old and still in great condition.

Incorrect.....as said above. mine have been washed in the dishwasher for 12 years no with no damage being sustained. In fact, they are as goos as new.

That is the info' on Global's own website, perhaps you should inform them of their mistake!

Looks like handles snapping off is not an unusual problem:

My global's are still ok despite going through the dishwasher, the Global disclaimer for warranty pretty much absolves them of replacing it for anything so I still think it's a bit far fetched, of course YMMV etc.
