i have half been told about an ale/belgian beer brewed with champagne.. anyone able to fill me in? apparently it's fom waitrose???
You are thinking of Lambic beers, which are given a secondary fermentation in bottle like champagne. Most are flavoured with fruit, but Gueuze is natural and is somewhat champagne-like.
yes maybe it's is this gueze..

BUT 9and i have never had one) it's my understanding that lambics are really really inconsistent and generally you don't get them in outside of belgium because people don't want to have such a high risk of having a cr4p beer..?
edited to say.. so would waitrose sell such a thing??

it shows up my wine knowledge more than my beer knowledge but would it be some yeast by product of creating the champagne that would be 'added' to the beer..?

Anything by the Theakston family is good IMO, well certainly anything from Masham in any case.

However I'm enjoying a slightly chilled Bishops finger at the moment.

Before the Harveys ban, the landlady at the Lewes Arms used to sell Harveys Best for at least 15-20p per pint more than the GK stuff. She did manage to make a profit on it - I know she got her bonuses and still it outsold GK beers...
Just for closure, GK gave in in April after four months: they caved in entirely, said that they were wrong, sacked the divisional manager, and put three Harveys beers back into the Arms.

Pity it took public ridicule in the press, including the FT, and a falling share price as a result to prompt action that should have been taken much earlier.

So we're back in the Lewes Arms - but a tad more warily than before...
It's just a shame that some of the old regulars still won't go back even after the 'win'. Understandable that they don't want to line GK's pockets, but strikes me as strange reaction to the overall positive outcome of a campaign they were part of.

It's still noticeably quieter in there than pre- Harveysgate

There are many beers given a secondary fermentation in the bottle (known as bottle-conditioned in the UK). Champagne yeast is often used in stronger brews where the alcohol content would kill off a regular yeast.

There is a bottled lager I drank in Wales recently that was made with champagne yeast, and it tasted very good, though i can't remember what it was called paperbag

Gueuze is a bit of an acquired taste as this beer description might indicate:
"Nose is a heady mixture of banana, cider, fromage frais, vanilla and possibly baby vomit (but not in a bad way). In the mouth, it is somewhat sour and lactic, slightly fizzy and tart, with more vanilla."
Sounds lovely...... wink

Finished work early today so decided to imbibe in a bottle of Marston's Empire - very nice.

I tell you, real ale was one of the best reasons for moving to England.

It is - but a lot of it (I suspect) is to do with the fact that people have found/made friends in other drinking houses, such as the Con Club, the Gardener's and the John Harvey. All serve a fine pint of Harveys...

Mmm. Beer...

Some of my current faves are:

Various Ringwood brewery tipples (Fortyniner, Stout and especially Huffkin to name a few)
Rebellion Red & Rebellion White (though not blonde) - I may zip along the M40 tomorrow to bag a few more of their less commonly available ales ready for the BBQ
Summer Lightning is still tasty stuff
Old Peculiar
Some of the Badger beers (though Blandford Fly & Golden Glory can only be drunk in moderation!)

I'm always on the hunt for new ones..!

Had some strong IPA by Atlas last week on draught. Very good indeed.

Also had a fair selection of others. It has become a rule of mine that I must always work my way through the real beer board if I am drinking in the clachaig inn in Glencoe. Occasionally this can be troublesome as the board can start with 7 or 8 choices. These then are often changed through the night as something runs out and is replaced.

I often associate morning in Glencoe with very heavy headaches.

Only because their particular flavours are so strong, I'd prefer to move on to something different.

Yesterday popped over to the Rebellion Brewery and loaded up on Red and White, and tried some of the IPA & Smuggler which were both tasty brews. White is just fab.

Tried the new Hall & Woodhouse Stinger last week, and can recommend it.

http://www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk/beers/badgerales/s...

H&W must be one of the most consistent brewers in the country. I don't think they make a bad one at all, and they seem to figure in many peoples lists on here. I still go for Tanglefoot above all else, given a choice. The Fursty Ferret's also a good session brew.

That's it; I'm off out...

Sounds like Kasteel Cru - one of my favourites.
