o.k off today so drive 39 miles to Birmingham to sample the fives guys that everyone raves about.

18 quid for bacon cheeseburger all the way, with cajun fries. they added an extra patty for free. With a salted caramel shake.

so the salted caramel tasted like the McDonald's caramel sundae, exactly the same. the cajun fries tasted of salt with a little hint of spice and nothing special.

the burger was nice and bun etc, but tasted to me of a burger van stall at a farmers market, so nothing really special. not bad but could have done with mcdees big mac sauce. don't think i will gfo again.

Maybe i just had too high hopes, just a bit bland. the crunchy things in the burger were nice.

next one is rusholme chippy but that is 64 miles away, so need to work out reason to go.

Someone I know raved about 5 Guys for ages, we went. It was okay, burger & fries were on par with gastro pub but expensive for eating in a fast food place. Service wasn't great despite place being half empty on a Saturday lunchtime and plenty of staff on.

Not bothered going back.

Last night's mid beers snack. Chicken Gyro from a dubious looking place on the main strip (in Cyprus on holiday) and it was lovely, or I was smashed.

i would try again, maybe mix it up a bit. the good thing was i didn't feel chemically attacked after eating it, not like a mainstream fast food where you just feel ill.

will give original pattymen a try

Disappointing lack of fruit bowls and other solutions to the over crowded plate. I had a chinese on Friday from somewhere i haven't been before. Bland and salty overall, the actual chicken balls were good though. Bonus point for the stray chip in the bag with the chicken.

Nice arrangement there. We should think about putting together a lil coffee table DTP book in time for the Christmas rush.

I think everyone should have some kind of 'big plate' for their dirty takeaways (like gallardo did). It can't be a normal plate size, it can't be 'sharing' plate either (that's boring). it must be something else like above. It has to be something used for something large, like a pie, or pizza or lasanga tray etc... in my youth I used to sometimes eat out of a large glass pie dish for example.

imo 'deep fried' chicken/prawn balls could possibly the dirtiest thing in takeaway land.
the best ones i've had have been crap and the worst have been absolutely revolting, for example a miniature prawn enclosed in a gigantic ball of filthy greasy batter. I love dirty food but I think some takeaways go completely over the top with these.

S&S chicken out of shot too!

Noodles vary from place to place around here. I've had Singapore noodles with a 'soup' before.

crispy seaweed
salt and garlic spare ribs
noodles with beansprouts
crispy shredded beef in bird's nest with chilli & carrots
sweet and sour chicken (hongkong style)

Taken from the horses (err...) mouth.

I found a gig in the academy near rusholme that I could easily convince my friends to go to and that was the only excuse I needed. Could have just as easily gone to the same show in birmingham but no rusholme chippy there!!

Back before I started my diet I used a large serving plate for Indian takeaways, one day I will return to it.
