The two lane drive through ordering thing does my head its like lucky dip if you are going to get queue jumped. You pick a lane just to find the car in front orders £50 worth of food and are sat at the screen for five minutes then to watch 2 cars that turned up 10 minutes after you drive though the other screen. Then when you do get though you have the pleasure of sitting and waiting for the cars that turned up after you pay and be served.

Im just going to sit back from now on and only move forward when then next screen is clear.
It can be worse than that.

Many times I get to it when both ordering points are empty. I pull up to one...silence. Meanwhile two or even three cars pull up to the other one in quick succession, and all get served before me while I sit there like a dick. This has happened on at least four occasions that I can recall.

Does Hamburger University still exist in Hemel Hempstead?
HU is in East Finchley next door to the main HQ.
Spent a few days in that place during management training, i was 18, and it was all expenses paid by my store, including the booze. Didnt learn a damn thing on account of the hotel 24/7 bar, and a lovely looking blonde from a store in newcastle biggrin. Fun times.

I remember the in house restaurant being a sort of test bed for new burgers due out that year, and was very cool.

It seems Japan get the best McDonalds burgers.

http://viralscape.com/mcdonalds-bizarre-burgers/

Most of the specials we get here are so boring, I mean look at the Grand Big Mac......a slightly bigger Big Mac. Most of the American themed ones that were available a few months ago were just beef with bacon and change the bun and sauce every couple of week. Maybe a half decent cheese if we are lucky.

as someoone who is looking at a new drive thru design...

in usa theyre starting to do apps where they deliver it to your car at the drive thru - would this be better than queueing in the lane?

in a drive through do people prefer a touchscreen ordering or to speak to someone?

thanks

Wouldnt a touch screen really slow a drive thru down. As people change minds or get confused etc ?

Speeding up the ordering process is easy with technology. I think the biggest problem is if you cut 30-60 seconds off the order process they have less time to get the food ready at window 3.

My local mdcs now has a window 4 which is good as you don't have to park up.

What I think could work well is if you order on an app, whenever you like, but put your car reg in. ANPR the drive in so the order goes to be made when you arrive.

I’m a complete tight arse so my favourite is the spicy chicken snack wrap off the saver menu, the sauce is delicious.
And I’m not a fan of the new system. Just seems to take longer. I always prefer to deal with a human as well.

You could get rid of the drive thru entirely. Build an app for order and paying which includes your car details and then have the ANPR on the car park entrance which then sends a message to your phone to tell you what number parking space to take and then the food is delivered to your car.

Nice

Even better - drive in, park, use the app to order and input your registration number. The app works out your rough location (through GPS) and the reg number narrows it down. Food comes out and is delivered to your car. No need for ANPR.

That would be really cool.

How about you just press a button on the app to tell it you're feeling hungry.

App knows where you are and where you're going from your sat nav app.

It decides what you want to order based on historical data, time of day, availability in store. You can make changes to suggested order if you want.

Cooking time is calculated and app temporarily modifies your route to take you to the nearest store where your order will be ready just as you arrive.

You drive into car park and through 'express order' lane, wind down passenger window and as you pass the delivery point the order is delivered straight to your passenger set (or passenger) by compressed air cannon without you having to stop.

The problem with the get to the car park idea is that the car park is for restaurant customers. There needs to be a few high turn over spaces for app take away orders. You wouldn’t want people parking and eating what you have just given them either as you want the space turning over. I never understand why people drive thru then park in the car park and eat

I had a Triple Cheeseburger meal in the Maccy D’s on the Champs Élysée this afternoon. Ordered on the touch screens which was super simple and, due to the really high foot-fall, it was quick and freshly cooked so that the cheese had not even had time to melt. Really good experience.

Mmm - Triple Cheeseburger...

Went to McDonalds on Saturday at Clacket Lane services and they were out of Grand Big Macs so didn't get one. They were also out of drink lids so as I accelerated up the slip road to get back on the motorway my drink went everywhere. Fun times.

Was planning to try again at a different McDonalds today but was driving too fast down the A505 and completely missed it.
