I went to an independent coffee place last week on the strand. Flat white with almond milk. Guess. How much they wanted...
Given that I paid 4.40 for a flat white recently way away from London, in excess of £6 ? Australia is the opposite to here where it's harder to find a chain coffee shop than an independant! Not that you would try to find a chain!

When I was working out of an office on The Strand, at least 50% of people seemed to rock up, coffee in hand every morning.
My office is in Marylebone. All the young bucks rock up with their morning coffee from Pret like it’s some kind of status symbol. There’s a decent bean to cup machine In the office that’s free and probably not far off the quality of coffee you get from Pret.
I feel like an old man judging them for spending loads of money on expensive take away coffee and even more expensive take away lunches from The Ginger Pig. I tell them to bring their lunch from home, drink the free coffee in the office and invest in their pensions and ISA’s.

Yeah it was getting there. £5.80
Wow, just wow! When I see prices like these now, my mind has to square it up differently. Perhaps like that’s £3 for a coffee and £2.80 ‘expensive city’ tax. You’re paying for the privilege of sitting on the strand - like monopoly. You pay for daring landing on a particular street!!!
I’d like to think London will price itself into a hole soon, its just ridiculous, but there will always be customers.
Cost-wise, just done some quick calcs for the cost per cup at home.
Machine/grinder/stuff = c. £3k; amortise over 20 years at 500 cups per year = 30p per cup
Coffee beans per 18g = 65p per cup
Electricity say 10p per cup (machine heated up for 2 cups)
Total = £1.05 per cup made at home.
Not 'cheap', but it's not about the money, it just piqued my interest :-).

Is it my bad maths or you're paying £36/kg of coffee?Machine/grinder/stuff = c. £3k; amortise over 20 years at 500 cups per year = 30p per cup

About £9 for a 250g bag delivered... so yes.
In my head a 1kg bag of beans should be around £17 but it's actually more like £30.I'm not such a grumpy old man (yet) that I complain about it. Making myself a really great cup of coffee and drinking it is one of life's little pleasures that I can easily afford.

I have a nespresso vertuo machine, and love the coffee, but the pods arent cheap, anyone tried those reusable pods, and any recomendations?
Been useing these for a few month's now. Works very well.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Reusable-Compatible-Nespr...
Peel the foil of your used Vertuo pods and away you go.
Means i can enjoy my current favourite Lavazzo.

Have you tried Redber's Central American Decaf blend - Dark ? been getting it from there for years as wife drinks decaf moslty, cannot tell you how good it is as do not drink it, all I can say is when by mistake I made a brew for myself I instanly knew it was not my normal drink TX1 said:
The problem is apart from being totally ripped off by the price it is also highly unlikely that the outside brew is going to compete with the one at home.
I went to a favorite cafe today as it’s in a beautiful setting and fancied a drive out. Went to Tarmachan, in Crathie - the chap had the scales out measuring the fresh grind exactly. My wife asked for some hot water to dilute her coffee (she loves coffee but has to bave it weak and had forgotten to ask for a single shot) and the barista refused, and instead made another one from scratch , as in his words, he could bring himself to just add water. His pride in coffee making was super to witness. I can’t recall the cost but it didn’t matter as the coffees were on point. Lovely to report this experience, but sadly as above said, it’s quite rare.thepritch said:
