I'm sure they tasted lovely, but why do nearly all chip shops cook pale anaemic looking chips? When I make them at home I make sure they are a nice shade of brown.
Honestly they were perfect.
I think if you took browned chips from a chippy home and needed a re-heat, they would become teeth breakers ?? Dunno

£15.80 for fish (haddock) and chips twice from Bizzie Lizzie's in Skipton today, having walked up to Simons seat above Bolton Abbey we were starving, it was a big portion and I didn't feel short changed but yes it's not as cheap as it once was.

£35 for two medium cod and chips, one children’s cod bites and chips, two cans of coke and one curry sauce. Is this expensive? South east.

To me yes

A small fish special is £5.90 in our local chip shop and a large fish and chips is £7.30.

Same order here would be about £23 (Chester)

Westmorland Street chippy in Skipton is better quality and value than Bizzie Lizzy’s, but doesn’t have the day-long opening hours

he only opens 3 days a week as well!

visited my parents in west yorks last weekend. saturday evening decided we wanted chippy tea, both places in the village were closed! had to drive down to castleford where i was relieved of £18 for one large and one small fish, normal chips, 2 breadcakes and some curry sauce.

on the + side they were really good but wasn't expecting the price!

Castleford prices don't seem bad.

This is my local chippie. very good, nice crisp batter on the fish, but i don't think it's cheap.

haddock down south is rare, so bonus points for that.

i did note the portion sizes were massive, the above fed me plus 2 pensioners, could easy feed 4 people with 2 large f&c.

£13.80 for large cod/haddock and chips with curry sauce here in Warwick. Probably won't go back as it's a sub tenner meal in my mind. Especially as I can still get a mega fish and chips at home in Whitby for about that and it's infinitely better.

define south?

available in most places ive frequented in east anglia/SE and SW. Maybe not centre south/south coast.

Most places have the big 3 options, and many more skate, and an other too boot (rock eel, hake, coley etc)

We get haddock in most of the decent places down here in Kent, I love it.

always thought it was a yorkshire only thing as its landed in hull, often the only option [as it should be]. it pleases me that at least parts of the south are having the correct fish with their chips smile

If you are buying in Castleford, worth hunting down a family owned firm called “Lanes”, have always been lovely over the years but they move their shop around a bit…..

If you frequent Scarborough, North Bay fisheries are incredible near Peasholm Park and Lifeboat Fish Bar just off the front. Both are takeaways, Lifeboat has a tiny restaurant with about four tables in a back room.

Not a cheap meal anymore, but when done right they are sublime. Think a lot of tourists get ripped off and overcharged generally sadly.

My local chippie has just started doing a small fish and chips for £7, but at lunchtime only.

It's just enough for me and missus to share one of a lunchtime. Had one this week as it happens, it was most enjoyable.
