Went to get a piece of fish, two battered sausage and a can of drink last night (no chips) and it came to £10.75 (this is near Hythe, Southampton)

Turns out they wouldn't take card payment (only had my phone with me), it was cash only. Saved myself £10.75. I wasn't unhappy with not being able to get them, at that price!
They haven't got far to go for the oil then!

Might have been featured on one of his shows... and said..

as seen on
RICK STEIN ?
His name was definitely displayed... because both me & my then GF remarked about it & then it clicked, regarding the ridiculous price.
Another shop in Weymouth was visited by him, praised & got a mention in a book of his.
Maybe this place, just went a bit too far... being nr Chesil beach.
Nicely presented tables, crockery & cutlery etc.
Perhaps it’s no longer there...

Or was it another Rick Stein. scratchchin

dont let facts get in the way, first of all it was a restaurant, then a small shack, and now from being his, his name was merely displayed.

lets look at the knowns, no record of him having a restaurant or pop up in that location.
Prices in the seafood for sit-down are less than 30 quid.
Prices in his takeaway are cheaper still, both sit down and take out.
Your story has changed a few times.

happy to be proven wrong, but doubt it will be.

Still lets continue tarnishing mr steins good name for ripping people off(although his padstow takeaway is rank imho).

as someone above says as featured on Rick Stein could possibly be it, but its highly dubious still imo and 30 quid is not happening in a million years. you should have started with a more realistic number.

nothing personal here milkyway just find it annoying people posting blatant lies for no applicable reason than to tarnish someones name, i assume.

back OT now

I remember Tom Aikens' Chelsea take-away back in 2008 which charged £11 for a piece of gurnard the size of a fish finger, and six chips redface

Ok they were triple-cooked in beef dripping, but it's still six chips.

Even the most jaded and cynical of Chelsea's advertising executives were astonished.

It didn't last long:

I think Tom Aikens was one of the first chefs in the UK to serve 'as is' to customers. Previous to that it was used as lobster bait. There's not a lot of it, hence the portion size was no larger than a fish finger.

Fast forward 15 years and it's now 'trendy' and mega expensive.

One of the components of a bouillabaise I think. Boil and strain off the bones.

I'm intrigued how do you strain off bones from fish? Or is it to make the stock and bin the rest?

Monkfish itself is a scabby bottom feeder that people used to just give to their cat.

yes

Boil quite hard as it doesn't need to be clear. You want the fats and gelatine from the fish to go into the liquid.

Then strain off the 'solids' - bones, globby bits and aromats.

VC Jones is a very good chippy, sit on the beach or in the sitting room at the rear.. happy days..

Also we use the forge on the sea front, really good fish fish, optional chips and lobster on the menu too, and they do freshly shucked oysters, yum..

Sounds steep but I was looking at Murgatroyds takeaway menu earlier (also managed to find an outdated one), prices have certainly shot up!

Best value is probably to go for the specials, as easily will feed two. Enough leftover bits for the dog also. wink

The rock from aldeburgh at weekend was worst I've ever had.

the thing with rock eel/salmon is a number of things (are they all shark/dogfish?) can be classed as it and i suspect it varies place to place hence the differential in quality, sometimes firmer and sweeter other a soft grey tasteless mush.

My old man maintains rock that you get now generally is not a patch on what you got 30 years ago.

I paid £8 for haddock and chips yesterday at the Skyliner fish and chip shop in Cross Gates, Leeds.

It was freshly cooked and very nice, thick white fish with crispy batter, and cooked in beef dripping. The chips were nice too but the size of the fish was smaller than I'd expect (unless ordering a small portion), certainly smaller than that usually served up at the Wetherby Whaler, which is my local fish shop.
However, it was ideal as a lunch time portion.

This was North Devon to be fair so also had it's share of tourist tax.
