Tried a new frozen line I'd not seen before in Aldi - Specially Selected indiviudal dauphinoise potato portions. Thought they were pretty good.

Wine question - I'm about to give up booze for a month from Sunday, so will be getting a bottle of red to polish off over the next few days.

As it will be my 'last supper' for a while I thought I'd blow the budget and go for an Aldi one up to £10.

Does anyone have any red recommendations for their pricier offerings?

The Vinsobres Cru du Rhône at £8.99 is well worth the money.

They do them "fresh" in a box sometimes too, lovely and creamy

Concur with this, very nice indeed. In addition to the good apple-toffee balance, the salt in the salted caramel is only just noticeable, which IMO is how it should be.

Also, bagged some apple stollen bites. Managed to last almost 3 hours of intermittent grazing on the kitchen top before they ran out.

Still no chocolate stollen yet, but the Amarone is back on the seasonal shelves.

I bought the violet creams, and expect they taste similar to last years. Not intending to try them tonight as I'm full from dinner.
Didn't buy the pink gin or mint flavours, just thought I'd mention that new flavours had been added to the usual rose and orange creams.

Big disappointment. They don’t really taste of anything to me. The Violet ones in years passed have had a much stronger taste to them and very definable. These are bland, chocolate and fondant, no ‘flavour’ to them. Unfortunately I bought a few packets. What a waste.

Pink gin and chocolate just seems to my uneducated tastes to be two flavours which just shouldn't go together, hence perhaps they've dialled back the strength of the bitters.

Maybe I'm a just a heathen, it could be like salt and chocolate, sounds wrong initially, salt vs sweet, but it really does bring out something in the chocolate taste. Downside though is the tangential result that one get sick of seeing too much stuff adulterated with flaming salted caramel.

I know Aldi do a Lasagne sauce, not sure if that's bechamel. Looked it up and got a news article about someone complaining it tasted of bacon. Does not compute, everything tastes better with a bit of bacon. Not helping am I.

White sauce isn't difficult to make though, flour, butter and milk and none of the chemicals added in the ready made stuff.

I found the almond filling very 'manufactured'; too much almond flavouring.

The pain au raisins of that same new range are, IMHO, a tour de force. Very, very good, but do make sure they have at least 4 days left on the use by date.

Not quite what you asked but the last bottle of wine I had from Aldi made me want to give up wine so should help you no end!
