You know what? Never stepped into either of those two places.
Why? Because there was others closer by.

Used to love TGI's when I was a kid, however around 10 years ago they seemed to slash their menu by around half.
They slashed portion sizes too "due to public demand" yet the prices didn't seem to fall quite as easily.

I always assumed that my memory of portion sizes being bigger was because I was a kid at the time, however what you say wouldn't surprise me.

Nope, they did indeed reduce portion sizes overnight. I used to eat there quite a bit about 10 years ago but nowadays tend to eat out less but splash out when I do. This may explain why, having eaten at TGIs for the first time in years a few weeks back at a pal's leaving do, I found the food overpriced, overcooked, badly presented rubbish. I was then to discover that the price of the meal was not far off that of my usual haunt, which is in the good food guide and has a Michelin starred chef! Bella Pasta, Franky and Benny's, Chiquitos, etc are all crap frozen food for the undemanding, I'm afraid.

Pizza Express for me is the only High Street chain worth bothering with although on an early start when you're in a hurry nothing beats a cheeky sausage and egg mcmuffin from Maccy Ds - it's the one thing that drags me in there, dammit.

I haven't been to either of them and only have been to pizza express once.

I have nothing to add to this.

I just wanted to get this on my list as I like seeing the PH snobs to battle with the PH egalitarians.

SWMBO and I went to TGI's last night with two other couples. 150 quid for the six of us, 2-3 courses and drinks / cocktails. Sesame chicken strips in JD sauce, serloin surf and turf cooked properly rare, and more JD sauce. YUM. Not the height of fine dining but was a fine meal out (following a couple of frames of bowling).

No. But that scum who drive vans are typical customers of the aforementioned establishments.

Lets be honnest, they don't do they. Your just saying that to make yourself feel better for some reason. The people who go there are average folk, people with kids, people who have been shopping for the day, teenagers having something to eat before going into town or to The Pictures.

But yeah, its full of scum.

The ribs from TGIs are great, they have a few new different flavours of sauces, as are the burgers with the onion rings and bacon with the seasoned fries - they are so filling sometimes I park my van outside the door with the hazards on so I don't have to walk so far.

TGIF is actually very pricey compared to where most people would eat out so how you can call its customers scum is beyond beleif. A meal for 2 is around £40, way more than a Harvester or Carvery. I have found the clientele to be pretty discerning and the chicken wings really tasty. Perhaps most on PH dine at the Fat Duck regularly and if they want a quick cup of tea, they go to the Ritz.

TGIs. Purely based on the JD sauce.
