THE STEAK THREAD, served a la Man

I’m going to guess the whole filet from Costco for about $100. If so, the size of the grill probably makes the steak look a lot smaller than it really is.
Incidentally, I’ve just come back from Costco not knowing they close on Memorial Day so my plan to sous vide a steak failed miserably.

Good guess all round!Incidentally, I’ve just come back from Costco not knowing they close on Memorial Day so my plan to sous vide a steak failed miserably.
Whole filet from Costco - it wasn't the biggest one. I don't remember but probably around $80.
It's not a huge grill - I'd guess around 24" x 18". Nice size for cooking a filet for 4 of us for dinner.
Quick to do as well. About 8 minutes either side followed by 10 or so resting. Next time, I'll sous vide it and finish on the grill.

...some of the steaks there were £90/KG!...
Never ceases to amaze me how much prices vary, imported frozen Brazillian fillet is £18. And granted its not certified soil association organic etc but considering how much the texture and flavour is affected by the cooking (which most people seem to get wrong anyway) it seems crazy to be paying that kind of premium unless people are more interested in the story behind it than the actual product.... makes me think, maybe it should be a steak night tonight...

Saw this in Selfridges a couple weeks back. They couldn't tell me if it was proper USDA Prime meat so I didn't buy it. Did look good though. I've decided to continue perfectly my techniques using supermarket meat before I go buying expensive meats.
Went away for the weekend and the wife & I both had steak one night - she was raving about it as she had it last time we visited this place. Honestly, not great.
I actually thought my home cooked steak on relatively cheap supermarket meat was better, tastier and jucier than whatever they were serving. They were out of fillet so we ordered sirloin - theirs tasted very smokey (not in a good way) and even though I asked for 'more rare than medium' it was a bit tough. The inside colour was ok. Perhaps it was tougher because it was sirloin, either way I didn't walk away impressed. Especially not for a steak that cost £30!

Picked up a couple of tomahawk ribeyes from Costco yesterday. Went for the smallest ones on the shelf, which were still massive, at approx a tenner each.
V nice (didn't take any photos as I was stuffing my face).
Luckily I did. :-). I have been pleasantly surprised by the beef from Costco. V nice (didn't take any photos as I was stuffing my face).
