Which Hawksmoor?

Tried the Hawksmoor Seven Dials last night for the first time (normally go to Air Street), and was quite disappointed.
The Chateaubriand was so covered in salt flakes that it spoiled the taste. The peppercorn sauce had the consistency of water. The staff did take the former off the bill, which was nice - but not sure I'll try this branch again in a hurry.

Not even in the same league though is it. Cheap meat cuts, and they look and taste it, pants service, grim little underground dining room, and that cheesecake, while tasty, isn't a patch on half of the desert menu at Hawksmoor.
Seconded. After reading reviews, I was looking forward to a early, pre-theatre dinner at Blacklock but left disappointed. We all had that £20 each all-in thing; starter "bites" were tiny and nothing to write home about. Some of the chops were seriously tough and obviously lower quality meat - the piece of bread/pitta that had soaked up the juices was probably the best thing about it.
Having only 1 dessert on the menu only works if its a good one. I wouldn't put a sickly white chocolate cheesecake in that category, especially if its only recently been defrosted and is still a bit hard in places...
Pretty poor all in all.

Im not a big fan of Hawksmoor in any of its London guises. I find the food not that great and the surroundings (particularly in Air street and the like) is so big its just too noisy and not a nice experience. I find it really hard to get a good steak in our capital as I think MASH is fairly average, Smith and Wolesnsky is dire, Blacklock as mentioned above is OK but the portions are not great and its not really a lingering place its eat and leave. Goodmans I have always found to be quite dull, Gaucho, JW and Maze I would throw in with Goodmans. Maybe im just too fussy

The Shakey Petes ginger ale is an absolute must. As a starter the potted beef with Yorkshire pudding is lovely, the girlfriend who didn't want a starter proceeded to eat most of mine! I had the bone marrow as a side dish and that was also nice.Obviously I will be having steak, not sure what the Mrs will choose but are there any hidden gems on the menu that are worth a try?

Have you tried Rowley's in Jermyn St. The one time that I have been there I enjoyed the steak.Chris Type R said:
