So I have been roped into cooking a meal tonight for 8 people. The gf's mum was going to make Coq au vin, but I felt obliged to takeover this task when it became apparent that she didn't realise it had wine in it. On further questioning it turned out she didn't even know what it was and she wasn't going to use a recipe.

Anyway I said I would do it.

It has now become apparent that one of the people coming for dinner has a severe onion allergy. No chives, leeks, scallions etc either, however garlic is ok.

So the question is what could I use as a replacement for onion? My thoughts were Celery or Peppers. Any other suggestions as at the moment it's sounding a bit crap.

Have you tried asking the freak allergic person what they would normally substitute? I'd be worried about inadvertently putting in something that is related to the onion, or has a similar property that sets the allergy off.

The onions are those really small ones anyway (think pickling onions), can you just add them and not serve him/her any? You don't chop them or slice them in any case.

Unfortunately it's a very severe allergy so no onions at all. Not even onion powder... So cooking with them is just a no go.

They normally use cellary as a substitute. However I can't see it tasting too good.

At this point, I'd be looking to make something else entirely.

In which case, if I were you i'd cook the onions separately, fry them first then whack them into the oven and add once the dish is plated up. Do the same for the celery.

Job jobbed.

ETA: Or indeed, just don't give that individual onions or celery. It won't ruin the dish totally to be served without.

I'm on the same page as you MC... But as an alternative, how about fennel?

Elephant garlic, peppers or go for Chicken provencal leaving out the onion. I'd sent her to kfc though.

Weird being allergic to onion and not garlic.

You could always do two, one with onions and one without. My son hates mushrooms (typical 9 year old) and I regularly do beef bourguignon on a a stove top in pans, one without mushrooms for him and one with for everyone else.

Maybe its ust me but if I had a similar allergy I'd be mortified if I thought everyone at a dinner party was having to eat round my problem. If you are set on cooking Coq Au Vin then order the punk a Dominos.
