Broke my first string
Discussion
If it's an electric, probably 9s. might be a lot heavier if it's an acoustic. I just put 11s on everything. ![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
How long have you had the strings on the guitar? The recommendation is to change every six weeks if you play regularly IIRC. It's a good idea to get used to changing strings in any case.

Depends on the guitar & what sound you're trying to achieve & your style of playing.
I used to play a Les Paul & used Ernie Ball skinny top heavy bottom (10-52's) but they'd be a bit daft on something like a Strat or Tele where you want something like regular or super slinky's or 9-42.

LP or Strat ?
I used to regularly break strings on my Tele, but not broken one since I ve had my LP.
Scale length on a LP is a bit shorter, which means lower tension on any given string gauge. that probably explains it. I used to regularly break strings on my Tele, but not broken one since I ve had my LP.
It's a good idea to cost the bridge saddles and the nut groove with graphite from a pencil - it lubricates it a little and stops the strings from snagging.
