count me in too. love loads of different metal bands, grew up on maiden,saxon,motorhead,zep,kiss,purple,AC/DC,hawkwind etc and have never stopped listening to their stuff. loved the grunge era too (soundgarden, pearl jam etc) Maybe its my age but i still listen to more of the bands from the 70s/80s than more recent bands, although i love the pumpkins, janes addiction,GnR etc. might try some of the newer band recomendations on here..

Jazz, as has been said before, is musical wanking. Funk is it's deformed half brother.

There is certainly some crossover though, many of the top musicians have certainly had metal/hard rock exposure.

Not one for generalisations then.

There is some jazz that sounds like that, though certainly not all. To say one genre of music produces 'better' musicians than others is frankly bollox (especially if you are looking outside of classical music).

I am a big big metal fan. Always have been and always will be. And have been in a number of metal bands in the past too (sadly we never really made it big in any of em

I like pretty much all genres of metal, from Death, Thrash, Black, Nu, 80's,pomp, experimental, indie and glam. Admittedly, as always, there is some crap out there in all of those categories, but overall an excellent art form, which i guess is a bit like marmite - you either love or hate it.

The origin of "Heavy Metal" ?

V.1 Review of Hawkwind in Sounds, describing thier sound

V.2 Used by William Seward Burroughs in one of his novels in the sixties , "The Soft Machine" Name of Novel also used as name of non-heavy metal band "Soft Machine"

Koenig

V.3 Have heard it came from line in Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild - 'Heavy Metal thunder'. Don't know if that is the case, but would certainly fit.

I'm off to see Within Temptation at the Astoria in London tomorrow night.

I still have two tickets to get rid of for the same, or near as,the amount they cost me.

Looks like I might have to "tout" along Charing Cross Road Tomorrow hehe

and me. i got some very weird taste in music. from pink floyd and Led Zep through to Clutch, Korn, R.A.T.M and Iron Maiden and then onto the romantic composers such as Mahler and Bruckner. I can't listen to heavy metal whilst driving though, i just want to get my mosh on and can't concentrate properly.

Most metal fans I know have been through various other types of music, but when they get into metal they realise they've finally reached the pinnacle, and there's really nowhere else to go. This is why, at nearly 48, I've been a fan since around 1974. I saw Stone Sour at the Astoria recently, and currently have tickets for Ozzy & Black Label Society, Aerosmith, Velvet Revolver, Metallica, Heaven & Hell, and Alice Cooper & Motorhead, It's gonna be a great year for gigs.

And alloy, for a great cross-over sound. What genre is it? Nobody knows.

Stricly speaking those are Light Metal, rather than Heavy.

Actually Iron is somewhere between with Cast Iron leaning more to the Brittle side.
