My missus knew Eddie - right prick on all accounts.

Yes dear, I wrote it exactly as you said it.
and a prick that got to have a really interesting life for a while , even a member of the sex pistols for a week , not many of us can say that can we ?
Eddie Tadpole + gang supported someone at Poole Arts Centre once.... can't for the life of me remember who... possibly the Skids? anyway was walking to it when a van screeched up and asked for directions.. it was them and we cadged a lift.... not sure if prick-ness is relative to fame or anything else though.

Jacket - Merciful release logo on the back,
I have, 'mercifully', remained un-tattooed (mainly because I'm a pain-wuss, probably), but in moments of bravado I always fantasised about have this as a full back tattoo. Imagined it would give a similar effect, upon people first seeing it, of the scene in Cape Fear when De Niro takes his shirt off.

V8mate, what do you drive?
At the moment, it's a poncey V8 - 2003 Merc S500L.

Had American V8s in my youth - '67 Mustang 302, '72 Mustang Mach 1, though my favourite was my first 'Yank': a '70 Mercury Comet. It was the 'little sister' to the Mustang, largest engine fitted was the 302 which I had. My Dad and I modded it: huge polished alloy 'tunnel ram' inlet manifold with dual, 650cfm four-barrel Holleys, full headers to cherry bombs and homemade side pipes (just appeared in front of rear tyres, didn't run along the sides), slot mags (super-wide rear, narrow fronts). The bonnet wouldn't shut so we had to cut a hole in it and fabricate a 'scoop' to go over the inlets.

As I said in the first post, I was still on 'L' plates with this car and was paying £260 per year insurance!

Alright, I'll play too...

First proper gig - The Clash at Leic DeMontfort Hall in '78. Place totally over-full and everyone jumping in time to White Riot as the set opener. Left a mark hehe

Other notables - SLF at Leic Uni maybe 79. 20 min drum intro to Johnnie Was with only a single slow strobe straight out the riser; must have brought on a few seizures!

Theatre of Hate at Corby sometime around then, pretty awesome really.

Crass at Northampton Paddock with Poison Girls.... Hmmmm confused

The Pogues, several times. Always mad biggrin

999 - still gigging I think

XTC - controversial one maybe but thinking man's new wave IMHO

Stranglers... JJ Burnel throwing martial arts shapes in very close contact with the audience while still holding a rythm

John Otway, so many times now and always a hoot. Including in my local for my 40th. Top nutter!!

Continuing and developing the new wave tradition, gotta mention Pixies, no?

Cocteau Twins, got all their albums, I think someone earlier mentioned them, well they deserve a second mention!

The Chameleons, another great one from the 80's. They did some reunion gigs about 5 years back, fortunately got the see them at shepherds bush. second skin and monkeyland both played, great live tracks...

Liz Fraser , what a Goddess , she had such a great way of moulding words together until they were actually an instrument , I still regularly wind up Pearly DewDrop Drops on the CD in the car. It seems to confuse most people...Fantastic !

A teenager in the punk era....

The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall

Best ever track - "Smile"
after 1986...

The Fall

There are others, too many to mention, but

"The Fall, always the same, always different"
I love the Fall - seen 'em twice - once in the early 80s when MES looked close to death and then about five years ago when he was actually dead but somehow still singing ...

Best track: Hip Priest ... decent others - hundreds to be honest but Man Whose Head Expanded, Hey Student, loads of 'em.

But if we'tre going back to late 70s/early 80s then stuff from A Certain Ratio, Monochrome Set, Diagram Brothers, early Japan, very early Simple Minds, Kraftwerk, Durutti Column, 23 Skidoo, all decent indie bands (before some got mainstream) and all very much seen on the gig circuit.

Remember driving to Bristol in my old Hillman Hunter with some washed up Billy mates to see The Monochrome Set at Dingwalls ... class.

I ahve some pics somewhere of mymate who in 1981 was the spit of David Sylvian from Japan (just prior to the Tin Drum album) - must try and scan it in ... he looks like a cross between Steve Strange/some Blitzkid and Sylvian ...
First saw them at The Factory in about 1987, but most recently at The Forum, Kentish Town a couple of years ago. I think Mark E. Smith was wearing the same silvery grey slacks.
He said something along the lines of 'It could be me and your gran, it will still be The Fall'. Seemed quite apt as the other band members looked about 15.

On a side note, was once out with a few mates and we saw Nigel Kennedy walking along street, just after Brix had left MES for him. He looked a bit worried when we all started chanting "Mark E Smith's going to kick your fking head in."

Bloody students, eh?
I was at that Forum gig as well. Can't remember how many other times I've seen the Fall, but MES once gave me the microphone as I was at the front so I got to do my rendition of "He is not appreciated...". I am a worse singist than he is, I can tell you!

ETA the quote was, when asked if this was the end of The Fall following one of their famous on-stage bust ups, "It could be me and your granny on bongos, it would still be The Fall"

Into the valley was the Skids. As for Plastic Bertrand. No self-respecting punk (or person) would ever admit that!
Oops! memory not what it was - of course the Skids, Swords of a Thousand Men was Tenpole Tudor.

I never claimed to be a punk, but Plastic Bertrand was great (for that one track).

Another thing I remember from the era which has surfaced is the music snobbery there was around "<derisive snort> that's rubbish! they're not proper punk". Suppose we'll get the "I was a punk before you were" argument soon (The Tubes btw).
Snobbery - definitely. Notwithstanding the 'Cure dispute' I (purposely and admittedly) teased a previous poster about the Cult. I'm too young to have seen the Southern Death Cult, but plenty of people my age would sneer at followers of the Cult because they were so 'bandwagon'.

Similar snobbery within the ranks of the Sisters' followers. If you didn't see them at York Racecourse in 1979 you weren't a real fan.

rolleyes
Nah its all bks, no snobbery with me. And who cares anyway... it's nice to remember this stuff... Apart from Bertrands' novelty record lol!!

I saw Southern Death Cult in their first incarnation. Then Getting the Fear / Cult variants. I only liked 'fatman' by them.

I just don't do smileys. That's all.
i was lucky enough to see the death cult, very raw stuff.. getting the fear, dint they become in 2 a circle? ive got some of their stuff on vinyl (in the loft of course). very cool

HA HA HA!!! so did I!!! (maybe not gloss but it was white)
OK, we've had lots of mentions of our leather jackets.

What did you have on yours?

Mine had 'SISTERS' in white, writ large across the panel at the bottom of the back and then the Einsturzende Neubauten logo in gold in the main part of the back. On the right sleeve was the Medics 'laughing face' logo in silver ..... bugger.... can't remember what was on the left sleeve.

Not particularly arty, but did it all myself and was very pleased with the finished result.

Edited by V8mate on Friday 17th October 20:00
i had southern death cult on the top panel and christian death on the bottom panel, with the crucifix design from 'only theatre of pain' in the middle. although in a fit of boredom i covered it in zodiac mindwarp logos....... hanoi rocks was on one arm, i forget the rest.. if this thread is still around tommorrow i'll take some pix if i can find it.

flesh for lulu's greatest track

bauhaus' greatest track

so punk, ie 1977 was a tad early for me, i tuned in as people started to learn how to play...
gereration x
i cofess to not only a billy idol haircut for 10 years bit to thinking old bill made some class tracks, and he comes from just round the corner

obviuosly i love souxsie and the banshees, very interesting fact (well i like it), the track 'hong kong garden' was written about my local chinese takeaway! honestly! aparently she used to live above the shop.. used to go there after the pub, name changed afew years back tho.....
