yesThat's the stuff. Most people's (not the PH elite obviously) typical idea of metal would be heavy or thrash metal - bands like Megadeath or Slayer - but i'm a much bigger fan of symphonic metal (or to subdivide it even more, symphonic power metal). Trans-Siberian Orchestra is another good example

Always been a big Led Zep fan, too young to have seen them live but saw Page and plant play wembley a few years back.
Same here. Must put you right though: Led Zep were NOT heavy metal. They were just the greatest rock band ever to walk the planet.

I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen Led Zep perform at Knebworth in 1979 www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpfo8Oj0Szo(pass me my zimmer frame) I think they wrote the defenition of 'Heavy Metal' back in the early 70's. Now I guess we would call it symphonic or progressive and dump them in the same pile as Yes, Rush et al.
Over the next three years also got to see Saxon, UFO, Whitesnake, Motorhead, Hawkwind, Rainbow (with Cozy Powell)

Currently listening to..
Evanesence
Nightwish www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1-oH3_akG4

and loads of old classics from the bands listed above.
I loaded all my vinyl and CD's onto MP3, media player lists 799 hrs playtime with no duplicates and all without having to move from my desk.
As for listening to it loud... I love drowning out that dull flat bass you get from some hatchbacks at the traffic lights with a Van Halen Eruption. Its funny to see them look around and wonder where the rock is coming from...

I've listened to metal for about 10 years now, despite the fact I don't know a single other person who does. I don't prefer on specific genre, as long as it isn't black metal I'll give anything a go. Not to mention a fair bit of punk / hardcore as well

I used to listen to a lot more metal than I do now, but I'm still partial to a bit of Korn.

I served my time as a rock chick during one of my Madonna-esque carnations..... I'm selective with my rock but do like SOAD & a few others from time to time.... when the mood takes (driving usually).

I've been a fan of Heavy Metal/Hard Rock for years, mainly Led Zep, RUSH, Maiden etc. Not so much into thrash, although I've always liked Metallica. You just can't beat loud sublime musicianship.

I've just cranked up "The Sound Of Perseverance" by Death.

What a remarkable album. The cover of Judas Priest's Painkiller is nothing short of a metal masterpiece.

Have been into metal since I was about 6 - I remember sitting on the carpet looking through my dad's records and putting on 'Overkill' by Motorhead. It blew me away.

I started buying tapes with my pocket money - at the same time my school friends were buying novelty singles, Disney records and charity stuff like 'Ferry Aid', I was saving up for 'Live After Death' by Iron Maiden - still my favourite album of all time.

Never really got into the 90s stuff so much so really most of my metal is stuff like Maiden, Motorhead, Sabbath, Megadeth, Pantera, Anthrax, Priest etc., but I do have some stuff from SOAD, Raging Speedhorn and the like.

As I get older I'm straying over into more of the classic/hard rock arena and am mostly listening at the moment to Neil Young albums (!)

In fact I'm wearing my old Seventh Son t-shirt to work today

Scream for me, Long Beach.....

oh i love maiden live!

where can i start, I have been listening to metal/heavy rock/rock&roll since I was like 6 years old (20 years- fook me!) most of what i listen to has been mentioned like GNR (all of the albums from original line up), Metallica (again all albums), Maiden (everything), Pantera (vulgar display of power), Rage against the Machine, Mega death etc etcbut there are others:

Killswitch Engage (all 3 albums are excellent)
Trivium (2nd album is a serious contender for the best metal album ever)
Biohazard (old skool)
Sepultura,
Dog Eat Dog (more hardcore than metal)
Deftones,
lamb of god (these are propper heavy, "art of ruin" is their best track),
dragonforce (check this link for the most amazing guitar shredding you have ever seen www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHbtCM47N6o&mode=related&search )
linkin Park (some not all of their work)
Faith no more (Angel dust is a truely great album)
Soundgarden (early stuff)
Godsmack (i Stand alone is an amazing track see www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyc2MuyUC5k )
corrosion of conformity,

i think there is a couple i missed but thats a good start.

Aye, I'm 37, and I think I first heard metal when I was 3 or 4, the riff at the beginning of Man On The Silver Mountain and I've loved metal ever since.

dragonforce just confuse me, the musicians are very talented but lyrically, the songs are utter dross, too much dungeons and dragons type stuff. its like listening to a conversation between two fantasy war enthusiasts....

Some of Petrucci's playing on the new Dream Theatre CD, Systematic Chaos, makes Dragonforce sound like they're playing a slow blues.

I started listening to "heavy metal" music at about 15 and still love it.

Best Live albums IMHO

Deep Purple - Made in Japan
UFO - Strangers in the Night
Status Quo - Live

Studio stuff

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden also Killers (also really like the latest one)
Motorhead - Bomber, Overkill and Ace of Spades
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Led Zep IV

I also like a whole load of music in other genres by other artists such as

Depeche Mode, The Cure, Marilyn Manson, Lucinda Williams, Sugarland, Sex Pistols, U2 etc.
