'kin hell yikes

Absolutely bloody marvellous stuff, that.

It seems a little churlish to post a link to Street Spirit by Radiohead with that in mind.
My friend Tom played harmonica on the album version of 'Again'. Archive are a fantastic band, and Again is one of my favourite tracks by them.

Ignore the wk video someone's made, but listen to the difference the blues harp makes (in fact, the live version - good as is it - lacks 'something' without it). It makes it all the more haunting, and makes my skin tingle every time I hear it.

As far away from trance as one can get.
You say that but I am not alone in being educated in the ways of classical music and also concluding that trance is what the likes of Bach and Mozart would be producing today. In fact, I experiment with creating classical-style music in a modern trance interpretation. Bluegrass or death metal would be as far away from trance as one can get, while classical music is a curious relative of trance with its layered harmonies and often complex compositions. smile

scratchchin

I getcha.

What you're effectively saying is that (sorry of I'm repeating you here, chap) a classical symphony, with the required layering of strings / woodwind / brass, each adding differing yet complimentary elements to the whole composition is similar to a trance tune that adds and subtracts harmonic / percussive loops to the tune when necessary, yes?

That is true to an extent, though it could be said for a lot of music at a basic level. There is no trance that I have ever heard that gets close to the genius of Bach and Mozart however. It's on another level completely, and setting up a few drum and synth loops is very far removed from the skill involved in an orchestral performance.

But that's comparing artists not the tools. My proposition was that if you gave Bach or Mozart a computer, you would get trance rather than more classical. I think Bach is more likely to do trance, anyway, because he'd really like the arpeggiator function in a synth. silly

Anyway, if you listen carefully to some trance tunes, it isn't just repetitive samples looped four times each like it was in the 1990s. You can hear the tune develop over time, with different synth voices (instruments) being added and removed, changes in key... it can be as complex as any classical piece if the producer wants.

Sadly, I do not have the skills or training to do this.
