Metallica - other similiar bands out there?
Discussion
Blaze Bayley's new album, "The Man Who Would Not Die" is an absolute stormer if you're after proper old school metal. Has everything I love about proper metal, but sounds fresh as well. Really is very good stuff indeed, and is nice to hear in this day and age of widdly nonsense like Dragonforce.
Add my vote to the "St Anger is a steaming pile of cack" column. Really has no redeeming features I can think off. None.

For old thrash you'd do well to look out some...
Testament
Listen to 'The Gathering'. Absolutely awesome album, rare in that there isn't a single st track on the album. I still listen to it regularly after about 8 years.Testament
Soil are also very good, their early stuff is very like Metallica, there later stuff is still pretty good though.
Clutch are good as well, got into them fairly recently and they're a bit like Monster Magnet but better.
Machine Head are quite good although not listened to them for ages.
I'm sure there are loads of others but can't think off the top of my head!

For another different slant on Metallica (other than listening to S&M as someone mentioned earlier, which is my favourite of their albums) try looking up some of the covers by Apocalyptica. Metallica songs without the words, but played on cellos! It works surprisingly well.
+1, they are far far far better than you could imagine. Also, have a listen to Black Label Society
Slash's Snakepit, particularly their first album "Its 5 o Clock Somwhere" is awesome. Proper music, sounded a bit 80's rock (nothing wrong with that at all) when it was released in 1995, but its awesome proper rock. Doesn't compare to Guns n Roses either, just becuase Slash is in it. Be The Ball is probably the best song on the album

I'm also liking Valient Thor at the moment but they're more like early Maiden.

Heaven & Hell (Sabbath with Dio)
Saw them at Cardiff last November. Even though Dio's about 95 and smaller than an elf he still blew me away. Really good.Have you tried Bruce Dickinson's "Accident of Birth", "Chemical Wedding" and "A Tyranny Of Souls" albums? They're excellent if you like him generally, although they've been around a while now.
Oh, and Rammstein. Volkerball DVD is brilliant.
