This appears to be a lot of guitar for the money and seems to meet the requirements of the op. Not dealt with this company before, anyone had and any dealings?

I've used GAK before and they have an impressive array of guitars in their Brighton showroom. I bought a John 5 Telecaster and found their service top notch.

assuming you havent been out and bought a shiny new electro acoustic...

this chap always gives decent advice

and once you've got your guitar, its a great set of lessons to get you playing it smile

I started on electric, but have both, and play mostly acoustic at the moment.

The general rule of thumb is to choose the guitar you think you'll want to play the most, as being motivated to get over the first few hurdles is the key thing....

I would recommend a Fender Stratocaster. Those can produce most sounds that an all around guitarist is looking for. For heavier stuff you should look into a Gibson SG and for a more twangy country sound find a Fender Telecaster.

Start acoustic as it will make you a better player in the long run.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I'm definitely leaning towards an Acoustic or Electro-Acoustic now.

I like the idea of a slim body (don't we all, fnar fnar) and was wondering if there are any true acoustics with a body like the Yamaha APX500 as that's perfect but I don't really need the electrics.
