Saw Slipknot and Behemoth at Download so giving it a miss (saw Slipknot in Cardiff last time too)
Tool album is a bit of alright too...
Like a lot.

I'm amazed there's so little comment on this. I can only assume everyone is still trying to absorb it!Tool album is a bit of alright too...

I was worried after the release of the title track that it might be a bit "more of the same" from them, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Pneuma almost stopped me dead in my tracks - I probably would have done if I hadn't been doing 70mph on a d/c at the time!
I'm still only on my 2nd listen to some of the later tracks, but Pneuma and 7empest have made the biggest impressions on me. I think Pneuma may even have shot straight to being my favourite Tool track of all - truly staggering work.
And I love that in this throwaway short attention span age, even the MSM have been eulogising over this. Would be funny if they toppled Taylor Swift from the top of the album charts in the next week or so

I've been busy trying to absorb weird Dutch Black Metal (Imperial Cult) and some stuff from Portugal that sounds like someone playing Abrumptum backwards whilst at the bottom of a lake (Benthik Zone)! Tool never really clicked with me for some reason.Swervin_Mervin said:

I'm with you. It's an utter masterpiece. Not the first time you hear it, nor the second, but it grows and grows. Lataralus was the same for me all those years ago.I was worried after the release of the title track that it might be a bit "more of the same" from them, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I was luck enough to see Tool back around 2001/2002 on a few occasions. They are the only band that I've seen that have left me physically shaking after watching them. They were incredible. Them releasing their back catalogue on Spotify has been great for me as I'd stopped really listening to them as I only have a CD player in the car and my CDs are in the loft. Made me remember how great they are. I'm pretty close to going to get that Tool tattoo that I promised myself 18 years ago now.

I've listened to it multiple times now and it truly is a staggering piece of work - on a scale they've never done before to my mind. In fact, it made me think the other day (when considering that some have commented on the tracks being too long and indulgent) that it reminds me in many ways of Mike Oldfield's compositions (and Orbital's longer numbers as well). It's like they don't feel bound by standard song length constraints, or the requirement for standard verse, chorus, verse structure, and instead allow the music to gestate into a fuller body of work that just flows more naturally. Maybe total bullcrap but that's kind of how I see what they've achieved on this. It "musical compositions" rather than simply "tracks" if that makes sense.
I've only seen them once, at the MEN in Manchester on the 10,000 Days tour, and to be honest whilst they put on a great show, the arena was half empty and it all seemed a bit lacklustre. Would love to see them again though - I might be going on my own though as no one else I know is really into them!
I managed to get one of the luxury Audio CD packages this week, and I see from their tweet that they'll only be making 1 more limited run. Phew!

I'd kept my expectations low, Undertow was one of the albums of my youth and although I've always been a fan, I haven't been waiting with baited breath for the last 13 years for the next album.
But its absolutely stunning, took me a few listens and my favourite song has already changed several times, surely the sign of a great album. Think I've settled on Descending which I'm currently thinking is the best thing they've ever done. I just need to stop listening for a while before I kill it through over-exposure.
I'm just amazed this band who blew me away as a teenager, almost 30 years ago, have managed to blow me away in my jaded middle age.

Pneuma edges it for me. And then there's 7empest. Oh and Descending! They're all pretty damn amazing tbh.
Pneuma for me too.I've been loving the album, I've listened to little else since it leaked. The limited edition version of the album is a pretty nice thing but I haven't actually played the CD yet and I'm not sure I ever will.
Now I just have to figure out when I'll have time to listen to new Cult of Luna this time next week.
