Springsteen has written some stunning stuff since he was 40And while I bow to no man in my appreciation of The Beatles and McCartney's output when he was a Fab you'd have to be one of his kids to call him " the best songwriter who has ever lived". His solo stuff leaves me bored and annoyed
Macca himself would probably find it curious you have not also mentioned at least Dylan, Lennon, Paul Simon. Ray Davies, George Harrison, Brian Wilson, Cole Porter, Sammy Cahn, George and Ira Gershwin, Chuck Berry, Lieber and Stoller, Rogers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Buddy Holly, Goffin &King etc as "the best songwriters who ever lived"

... and produce masterpieces. From stuff as simple as Mull of Kintyre to complex stuff like Penny Lane. Birthday to Eleanor Rigby. Range. Show me another writer that can equal that.
This is sarcasm, isn't it?Just announced on the radio that apple have release a tool (I presume they mean an app) to remove that album from your iTunes collection.

cos you gotta buy into the whole ecosystem - its so much easier to mix and match on a PC.
And most people are used to them from work. Apple have just about turned into the "big bad control freak" they were complaining about Microsoft years ago.
personally I don't know how they get away with it, the EU crucified Microsoft for their practices, but Apple seem to be 10x worse.
glad I'm not the only one who sees the irony here... and IMO itunes is just a big load of useless dogwk, fking hate it; and now that the 160gb ipod is being caned I'll be switching to a portable HD for the car and no need for this wky system ever again. s And most people are used to them from work. in what way do you 'gotta buy into the whole ecosystem'?And most people are used to them from work. Apple have just about turned into the "big bad control freak" they were complaining about Microsoft years ago.

And in what way is it 'easier to mix and match on a PC'? Yes you could build your own tower but if that was of interest you'd not be looking at any pre-built system.
The EU ruling over MS was due to the fact at the time there was little competition and those that attempted it were squashed by them (Netscape, Real etc)
Given that Apple are not a monopoly as only 10% of desk/laptops run their software and although their iDevices are popular they're far from having any sort of monopoly on the market. You're not forced to use their hard or software in any way shape or form and there's nothing Apple could do to change that situation.
Apple make their kit play with each other very well but there's nothing stopping you getting them to talk to 3rd party devices. Sure if you've chosen to use iTunes to manage your media you're going to need an iDevice if you want to take that media elsewhere. But if you were using a 3rd party media device then you'd just be using an equivalent to iTunes. You're not being restricted in any way.
I always find it curious as to why some people get so bent out of shape over Apple, to me it's getting upset over a feature or policy on a new Audi car when you've chosen to drive a different brand.

An American visitor to our predominantly British forum, how charming!Anyway, the reason why people react to posts extolling the wonders of Apple is that those wonders are bought at a heavy premium, there's nothing clever about making something good if it's also bloody expensive. Now if they were to make their reportedly marvellous stuff available at reasonable prices, I daresay they would take over from the PC and MS in short order.

Prince
Bowie
Lou Reed
as well as all the examples already given.
all the examples of McCartney's above are co written with someone else. Has he even written anything worthwhile solo?
McCartney was good in the Beatles and Wings.

The writing credits were shared, but most of the writing was solo. This is historical fact as well as pretty obvious when you listen to the songs. His and Lennon's writing styles show clear differences.McCartney was good in the Beatles and Wings.
Most of my favourite Beatles songs are actually Lennon compositions. When I say McCartney is the greatest song writer it isn't because I like his stuff better.

A man sued by his own record company for making music 'unrepresentative of himself'.
Interesting that in the Apple Store they're proclaiming this album as being "Mastered for iTunes", like that's some sort of advantage.
I would lament the loss of the Classic, but I was already cheesed off when they reduced the capacity of the biggest one so I switched to Cowon. Sure, the device isn't quite as user-friendly (!), but it plays all kinds of file formats and I can store all my FLAC files on it, which I'd much rather listen to than mp3s. iTunes doesn't bother me much one way or the other, but I preferred it a couple of years ago when everything was nice and straightforward. They've complicated it now to the point where I can't be bothered using it.
As for U2 - I never liked them anyway, so while it's very kind of Apple to give this away I'm not interested. Especially if it's "mastered for iTunes"!

Sorry to talk about U2 in a PC vs Mac thread, but I think SOR is a little bit of a return to form for U2 after the last couple of albums... At first I thought it sounded a little 'written by committee' I.e. "The Lumineers are doing well with this 'ho-hey' stuff, we'd better get some of that in there" but I started to like it more on second listen. Of course I don't expect them to ever match Achtung Baby or Joshua Tree, but it's not bad.

I'm on my 8 th listen and am starting to think this is their best since zooropa and possibly better than that Even better considering the global hatred of U2
