Yep!

Could have sworn it was Vai, just going on the shredding at the end of the tune. He looks very similar as well (although the use of a Gibson semi should have given me a clue that it wasn't Vai).

I've just listened to every performance on this thread, it's fantastic and a great reminder of some of the amazing music on that show (which I was lucky enough to go to back in 2007).
I keep coming back to this Future Islands clip though, I think it's my favourite so far and one of those performances that is so much better than the studio track. As an up and coming drummer of approximately 35years I love his groove and unusual open handed style

Courtney Pine, back in 2000.

I was a young and impressionable saxophone player in the school jazz band at that time. This appearance on Later helped me realise there was more to music than just reading dots off a page and playing school Christmas concerts. It set me off searching to see who this guy was, I found some of his CDs and then realised he was playing live near me a few weeks afterwards. I went to see that gig which just blew me away, totally and utterly. I started practicing my instrument more, ended up taking it seriously, found a new friendship group, starting copying Courtney Pine’s tunes and playing them in a newly formed band with my new mates at college. Then fell in with playing in local semi-pro big bands, met a guy who ran a local band who also played with the BBC big band. Played tenor sax in his band for a year or two (which was a real education), and ultimately went to uni to study jazz music. That led to a music teaching job where I met my wife and we now have two kids.

Genuinely a life changing TV appearance.
