The .1 indicates that you have a subwoofer and does not indicate that the system is not for music.
Move out of the 80's and into the present day.
if you want to talk about true play back performance then let's talk turntables!
It also indicates that the sound is compressed in a similar manner to MP3's hence it isn't "Hi-Fi". I could talk Chord DAC64 or Systemdek IIIXE if you like!!Move out of the 80's and into the present day.

In addition to those already suggested;
Porcupine Tree/Warszawa - great live album from (IMHO) the best band around at the moment.
Agree about Porcupine Tree, especially if your system has DVD-Audio capability and 5.1 surround. Superb band and the production quality is excellent.Porcupine Tree/Warszawa - great live album from (IMHO) the best band around at the moment.
I have all of the Porcupine Tree DVD-A discs. The are all superb. Just got the Lightbulb Sun reissue which has helped me re-discover this often overlooked album.

I used to think 5.1 audio was the devil's work but if it's done well and the right software is used it's great.
i work with Abbey rd and they realy know how to used multi channel to get the best from a perfomance.
as for subwoofers in general, there is'nt a two channel system on earth that dos'nt need help in the low end.
anyway the DAC64 great and what transport are you using?
turntable wise the systemdek is ok but look at a Avid

The DAC 64 is fed by a Meridian 200 at the moment and the way it works tends to "improve" even the worst compression offenders. As for turntables when the kids stop eating into my cash a Townsend rock, Excaliber combo will be on the cards along with the Chord Blu to replace the Meridian.
As for subwoofers who needs a subwoofer when you have Bass horns on Impulse Lali's. I could get the Ta'us but the size of the room means it would be overwhelming.
The original recording is compressed and often run into clipping before it's put onto vynil.
There are so many amazing CD players around at the moment, the chord is nice but for the money i reckon you could do much better.
The DAC64 is great but showing it's age now.
The townsend is interesting like all Max's products is very differant, i still reckon you should try a Avid.

OP, whats your new setup? Alot of the albums mentioned before really make my Naim + B&W Nautilus system sound out of this world
Agreed on the above - Do you mean the DVD Audio version?OP, whats your new setup? Alot of the albums mentioned before really make my Naim + B&W Nautilus system sound out of this world
There is a Seal album which is on DVD audio too. I loved the original stereo one which came out in the mid nineties.
On a good setup - and I mean good, both of those will completely blow you away. It really shows off how surround mixes should be and the format to the best of its ability. it is just a real shame that the format does not seem to be followed up.

You've got compression wrong, the correct term is "peak limiting". Basically the music is recorded louder. The best description I have heard describes it thus. A normally recorded track is is the length of a car. Peak Limiting is like crashing it into a wall, the front has all the parts still, it,s just pushed into a smaller space hence is louder. You cannot do that with Vinyl as the stylus will "jump" out of the groove. You can blame Music producers for that. The DAC64 is a "software" DAC. The Program that decodes the SP/DIF input(s) is held on an EPROM and loaded onto FPGA's that act as a very fast computer. The same "engine" is used in the "Red Reference" Player which is considered the Best player in the world. It is one of the Best DAC's in the world. Having said all that Chord are in the Process of replacing it. I believe the main thrust is in using faster data transmission rates between the new DAC and it's Transport as well as the main chips inside the DAC.
As for you choice in Turntables I prefer the Rock because of the "solid" sound it produces. I also dislike "skeletal" turntables but concede they do look good. I have always had a soft spot for the Gyrodec.
