The Cult have announced dates to tour the new album out in Feb - Im currently unsure about booking tbh. Saw them on the Sonic Temple tour and loved it.....
Saw them last time round at Hammersmith 2-3yrs ago, and had really gone to see The Mission and Killing Joke. KJ dropped out, and I missed nearly all of the Mission, but The Cult more than made up for it - might get myself a ticket this time round..Nom de ploom said:
he even cam out into the crowd on someones shoulders and then did a crowd surf. the crowd were a subdued, not as much bounce and mosh as previous years and i miss that.
The solo on the shoulders is a great part of their show, very cool.Saw SikTh tonight in Motion, Bristol. They absolutely killed it, so so good. Destrage were good too, Hacktivist were better than I thought but I can't quite enjoy the vocal/rap stuff. It worked with RATM. Not with Hacktivist.
Review of the year...
Royal Blood - Good gig, more accomplished than when I saw them in 2014.
Mark Knopfler - Nice mix of old and new. Some great musicians too. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Faith No More - Really enjoyable - loud, good crowd and Patton's still got it.
Nothing but Thieves - Better than expected. Shame the tube strike ruined their first headline gig. Would go and see them again actually.
Scott Weiland - far better than expected given his drug fuelled past, turned out to be his last UK performance. Support (The Last Internationale) were brilliant.
David Gilmour - Acoustically, probably the nest gig I've ever been to.
Nothing but Thieves - Not as good as earlier in the year.. more accomplished but not as fun.
Happy Mondays - worth it for Step On and kinky Afro. On superb form, far better than expected.

Alien Ant Farm - looked old and felt it
POD - still had it put on a great show
Hoobastank - really good even if the singer seemed to be on a different planet
Hevy Fest
Wraiths - early in a festival, can't say I remember really
Continents - same as above
Press To Meco - fantastic, their debut album is great too
CHON - technically talented, bit of a sit down and enjoy rather than anything else
Endless Heights - yeah can't really remember
Black Peaks - saw them twice this year, both times they blew me away one of the stand outs of the year, definitely top 3 performance
Break Even - nope can't remember
Teenage Bottlerocket - great stuff really good fun pop punk stuff
Touché Amoré - I think they were quite good
Landscapes - can't remember
Protest The Hero - technically brilliant, really good
Dillinger Escape Plan - a clusterfk of rhythm and noise, didn't quite gel with me
Coheed and Cambria - 4th time seeing them, never fail to impress, so so good
The Colour Line - no idea
Trash Boat - surprise little hit of the festival, really good pop punk stuff
Milk Teeth - disappointed, thought they were gonna be good, came off a little pretentious
As It Is - okay pop punk
Hang The bd - seem to remember they were heavy, that's about it
Crooks - nope can't remember
The Fall of Troy - like a less good protest the hero
Arcane Roots - second time seeing them, not through choice (support act), boring, good on cd though
Monuments - SUPERB, definitely recommend checking these guys out
HORSE the Band - first came across this band years ago, quite good fun live actually
Thrice - never got into them, but they sounded good live anyway
END OF FESTIVAL
Lonely The Brave - these guys were popular but they are better on cd than live
Pvris - another surprise hit, really cool band
Neck Deep - the crowd loved them but I wasn't convinced
Bring Me The Horizon - nailed it, proper entertainment, really enjoyed
Destrage - not really listened to before, but they played well
Hacktivist - I heard them from the tent at the festival and really didn't like it, they were a little better actually watching them but I only saw them because they were a support
SikTh - Awesome! Been waiting 8 years for this and it was well worth it, new EP is a must buy too!

Since I'm not likely to go to anything else this year, this is my list:
PWEI (Thekla, Bristol) - awesome venue, and possibly my gig of the year
Faith No More (Roundhouse) - enjoyed it, but still prefer the live shows with Jim Martin
Dropkick Murphys (Den Atelier, Luxembourg) - always a good live band, and great atmosphere in small venue
Scott Weiland (Garage) - agree with Podie on this, sadly his last UK gig but Last Internationale were superb
Kosheen (Jazz Cafe) - always good live, and this was no different.
Foo Fighters (Milton Keynes)- good but not great. Iggy Pop looks about 160 but still has it though!!
Acid Reign (Underworld) - had me stagediving for the first time in 20+ years. Awesome..but took me a week to recover!!
Faithless (Barcelona) - odd crowd as it was a corporate event, but still good.
Garbage (Brixton Academy) - the worst sound I've ever heard at Brixton reduced what would have been a great gig to just OK.
Destroyer (Lido, Berlin) - hadn't heard much of them before I went, very laid back on stage but nailed it.
Last of all, was Bananarama at another corporate one - pure 80's cheese, but provided some entertainment..

It was so hot sweat was running down the sides of the boat and even though they were using a new guitar each song the wood was expanding and they were out of tune by the middle of each song,
List of gigs pretty long this year, some real classics among them but standouts for me were the following:
Kraftwerk : Amsterdam Paradiso, best I've ever seem them and in a really small atmospheric venue as well
Mogwai: Roundhouse night 2, first night was good but this was outstanding and last full UK gig with guitarist John Cummings
Peter Hook: Victorious Festival, mid afternoon, pouring down with rain and he absolutely nailed it with a perfect set that wasn't bettered by anyone else that day
A Winged Victory for the Sullen: Barbican, never seen a group like them before and can't wait to see them again.
The Membranes: Rockaway Beach Weekender, didn't realise John Robb is as good a musician as he is as a journalist. Brilliant set.
Comeback gig of the year was Editors at Portsmouth Pyramids, thought they were passed it but the energy and enthusiasm of their early days was back.
Hope 2016 is as good.
ETA: The Membranes, didn't think I'd enjoy a punk band so much.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen at the Barbican tomorrow night, rounds off an excellent year for gigs.
A mate invited me to this, alas I couldn't make it. We did joke that it's the kind of band name favoured by Pretentious Music Journalist on Steve Wright In The Afternoon in the early 90's! "it's a sonic cathedral, man!"wal 45 said:

I saw them supporting the Stranglers at Manchester earlier in the year, and was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. I was also surprised that their guitarist looked (and dressed) a bit like a geography teacher.egor110 said:

Thanks for the steer, working through some of their stuff now. droopsnoot said:

We had similar thoughts in that he was probably a university lecturer in some cool subject for his day job, good guitarist though.Gassing Station | Music | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
