Sweden seems to have gone through a death metal time warp of late. Seems to be a whole new wave of bands hellbent on doing it old school.

Feral
bd Priest
Morbus Chron

I know opinions vary and I'm probably just being a nostalgic old fart, but to me, this does everything death metal is supposed to. Creepy crawly sound, vocals that are sick yet intelligible and actual songs rather than just an obsession with squeezing a gazillion notes into everything just because you can. Love it!

Hadn't heard of them, but just listening to some stuff on YouTube. Not bad. Trawling YouTube trying to work out who they remind me of, and decided it's some of the old Finnish bands, as they always had that deeper, doomier sound.

If anything, rather than listening to Disma, it makes me want to go and rediscover all these old bands from way back when!

I'm similar with Death Metal, in that I have the classics from late 80s and early 90s and dont tend to need any more - atleast when it comes to the 'Old School' sound. I try to listen to the odd new OSDM album but I know there's still a lot of bands/albums from 20 years ago to discover.. For example just today I've found Moondark, who I'll give a proper listen to tomorrow. I'm worse with Thrash, very little new stuff connects with me, partly because I love Reign in Blood and early Metallica too much.

Try this, it's a few years old but still great. Going to see them in October, first time for about 20 years.

Never really into the death metal stuff but do like some of it, getting into Industrial stuff these days, not bad for a 50 something. lol
Next gig will be KMFDM unless something else comes up.

Never been a fan of death metal, I think it all just feels a bit OTT to me. For me at the moment I've been listening to a lot of "tech" metal (as much as I loathe the name - but it has so many variations!) - it's all a bit vague, but try out:

Aliases (guitarist from SikTh's new band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMF41D8h1kE

Fellsilent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9BmUaEK24c

Periphery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfOnq-zXXBw

TesseracT (with their now old singer): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grwmUTrO180

Of course I also listen to lots of other metal - Machine Head seem to be making a bit of a comeback in my playlists, probably as their new album is due for release in the immediate future - something I'm seriously looking forward to after the Blackening.

Also a huge fan of Sylosis - didn't really rate the 2nd album when it was released, but now I've given it a good few proper listens it has some truly huge tunes on there, particularly in my eyes this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXdPoL1yQsA&ob=...

Finally, not really metal as I would describe it, but another SikTh man's new project - Mikee Goodman's the Painted Smiles, who released their new EP today - cracking stuff, worth looking up (nothing on youtube yet).

Another one that ticks my boxes. As with most things Australian and extreme metal, there's a degree of similarity to D666, but this seems more thrash driven. Simple yet effective.

Finally, I have found my "home" thread!!!!!!

I'm a keen motorist who is an accountant by day..... *yawn*. However, by night I turn into a fully fledged METAL DJ!! biggrin

Anyway, back to the discussion at hand.... I am a huge of ALL variants of metal/rock etc including this new wave of tech-metal or "Djent" as it has been referred to. Periphery and Tesseract are among my absolute faves in this genre and Circles are a worthy new band as well (Clouds Are Gathering is an outstanding track).

I'm seeing Machine Head in Birmingham this December and I can't wait. Been a couple of years since I saw them last and I'm thoroughly looking forward to them showcasing some of their new material on this tour. Bring Me The Horizon (who are supporting them on this tour) are a band that I initially hated but have now grown to love - can't wait to see them either.

I first heard Sylosis a couple of years ago and saw them for the first time at Sonisphere this year - they were phenomenal!! Like yourself Captainmatt, I initially thought that Edge Of The Earth (their 2nd full album and the first without their old vocalist) was patchy at best compared to Conclusion Of An Age. However, I stuck with it and thoroughly enjoy listening to it now - Altered State Of Consciousness and Empyreal are belter tracks!

Any Trivium fans here? Awesome new record and seeing them in Plymouth in December biggrin

Cheers, I'll check it (and this complete thread) over the weekend!

Being a DJ, I've got quite a few varied interests so am always happy to spread the word with fellow enthusiasts. Have any of you met up at gigs or festivals?

As for Trivium...tried liking them, I really have. Saw them supporting Maiden but they bored the pants off me. Really don't get what people see in them?

^Yeah. That.

Don't get me wrong, they were better than Dragonforce (who completely failed to get anyone interested at Maiden - even the singer seemed frustrated hehe) but I just couldn't get on with them. Very samey.

Yeahh I was chuffed to st with them at Sonisphere. Good weekend overall, but they were a real highlight. Tbh, I would have put them higher on the bill than Cavalera Conspiracy and some of the other bands who got 45 minute sets.

Also, Gojira in a tent, what was that about? Only reason I got in was because I stayed in there after periphery.

For those into the proggy stuff, Chimp Spanner is another person/act I can recommend. Not heavy really, aside from a couple of songs, but very very good. Absolutely adore the song Harvey Wallbanger.

Basick Records warehouse was supposedly attacked during the riots the other week. Might be worth an email.

Trivium? Like most of that 'American/Modern' Metal it is just essentially Pop Music with guitars, it doesn't connect with me like most other strains of Metal.

I think that Trivium's stuff is incredibly simplistic, and concur with the "pop music with guitars and shouting" assessment. Dull.

Anyway.

What about Dark Angel? Only released two albums in the late 80s, but what albums they were.

Definitely one of the spiritual ancestors of a lot of djent stuff.

fk me,i didn't know that!!

another vote from me for trivium not being up to much.technically 2 good guitar playes but too retrospective for no good reason to my ears.similar in many ways to bullet for my valentine.too much style over substance for me
