I’ve had elixirs on an acoustic since Christmas. I’ve only just got to the point where they need replacing. I’ve gigged a couple of times and play that guitar a few times a week. I’ve never played a string with such longevity.
That said, I don’t have an issue with changing strings and I’ll probably not replace like for like.
They do last for ages but they also lose a bit of tone over a normal set. I had them for an old acoustic but then bought a bottom of the range Martin which they don't sound great on. That said, I don’t have an issue with changing strings and I’ll probably not replace like for like.
Dunlop nickels on everything - good tone and last for ages, seem to be very corrosion resistant.
10-46 on everything apart from an Ibanez RGA in drop B which has 10-60 on it.
As an aside fitted one of these to a Floyd guitar to lock the trem so I can mess with different tunings, works a dream: http://www.tremol-no.com/

I use Elixir polyweb 11-52 custom lights on my Lowden 032se.
Tried every string going, but for me, the longevity and superb coating is a winner. I hate that scratchy sound you get with none-coated strings when sliding up/down the fretboard. I guess if you only play basic open chords and barr chords and strum it's not such an issue.
But, for fingerstyle using the whole fretboard I have not used a better string. Good tone, great life, super slippy, not that expensive.

Finished putting together my second guitar, a strat. Solid Madagascar rosewood neck with a 9.5" radius (slight compound) and medium C profile. Alder body with a flame maple drop top. Pribora custom wound pickups, locking tuners and Wilkinson vintage bridge. Body and neck built for me by a luthier, but again I did the finishing aspects.
Fairly crappy pic!

I like that very much but think it would look even better in a solid colour. I don't know why but flame always looks wrong on a Strat to me. Love that neck....Fairly crappy pic!
I am a beginner looking to upgrade my guitar in the near future. I currently have a Squire Bullet.
I've been reading and watching various bits on the net re the history of guitars.
I have ruled out Les Paul/SG/Telecaster style and prefer the Fender feel.
However it seems that some of the more 'modern' manufacturers have guitars that are more ergonomic - I was looking at Ibanez and Magic Man (i.e bodies and necks that are thin and bodies that have cut outs).
That being said most of my 'guitar heroes' tend to use Strats so its a toss up.
Anyone have a view on what to look at? I am into classic rock and a bit of metal.
Does the natural tone of the guitar matter that much in a world where there are so many effects?
Budget will prob be £500-800.

I'd say the amp defines the sound, but the guitar certainly influences it.Does the natural tone of the guitar matter that much in a world where there are so many effects?

I would recommend gojng to a reputable shop and trying many, many options, including ones you think you won't like. Buy (the) one that grabs you.
My first time venturing into this area of PH, but I thought I’d show this several year old photo of mine. Photo quality appears to be shocking so apologies for that...
Left to right:
Epiphone SG Special in pewter, quite rare I understand. Bought for me by my grandad when I was 9 or 10. Currently out of action unfortunately, needs some soldering but I might just overhaul all of the internals.
Squier Strat Tom Delonge signature with custom paint job and inlays. I’m a huge blink fan and can play a good 50% of their songs, so when I saw this on Gumtree for £200 a few years back I just had to have it. The SD Invader is quite the pickup!
My dad’s Squier Strat that he’s had since he were a lad. I took custody of it for a few years because he stopped playing but he decided to get back in to it so I got the electrical issues looked at and I gave it a good polish and replaced the strings for Father’s Day. While in the shop getting it looked at, they remarked that it was quite a rare thing, but this was 2 or 3 years ago now and I’ve forgotten what was so rare about it...
None of these are particularly expensive, and I don’t play so often at the moment, but I love them rather a lot.

Nice collection. If the Squier Strat has a serial number begining 'JV' (on the metal neck plate) then it is one of the early made in Japan Squiers and yes, they have become quite collectable these days. I saw one in Andertons a while back for £999 and it sold quickly, but was immaculate. I bought mine new in 1982, but I've re-sprayed it twice (then had it professionally re-sprayed in the original two tone, but in Nitro), re-fretted as I wore them out and I've got a whole spare pickguard with Bareknuckle pickups and an Eric Clapton mid boost.
I could put it back to standard, but the re-spray and re-fret would devalue it. Not that I'd ever sell it after all these years; even took it away to sea with me when I was in the RN. I've played a lot of other Strats over the years, even MIA ones, but they never feel quite like my one, so no point me buying another one.
Before I changed the pickguard/pickups/added the mid boost:
As it is now:
I've just done a deal to trade in one of my MIM Telecasters against a black SG Standard I found for sale locally. I'll post some photos on here next week.
