New one for me, a Squier Paranormal Series Stratosonic, bought on a bit of a whim but first impressions are good and it's a lot of fun. First ever Squier I've had too, after lots of Fenders. Build quality is really good, no major fret issues either. I'll be sanding down the neck from the factory gloss finish to a more satin one and possibly swapping out the pickups for genuine set of P90s, we'll see.

What are you going to use to sand down and refinish the neck? I've got an ESP Ltd EC (Les Paul-type thing) and I love it, but not the gloss neck!![](https://thumbsnap.com/sc/5ANiGiF9.jpg)
Initial research seems to suggest steel wool or 2000 grit sandpaper is the way forward after taping the headstock and heel off with painters tape or similar. As Animal above says, it's just taking the shine off, not the whole finish so no need refinish with anything else. I'm going to remove the neck too as steel wool filings play havoc with the pickups. I'll report back when it's done.
Rather than use wire wool, you can buy different grades of plastic pads and use those instead. Probably a bit finer than the pan scrubber type as if it is too coarse then it will scratch the finish rather than just dull it down. I've done it on a few of mine; some with factory poly finished necks and also on new necks that I've finished myself in nitro.
After a lot of playing the finish polishes back up again, but it's quick enough to dull it down again with the right grade. The MIM Jaguar I posted further back came with a satin finished neck and I find this works really well for me, so I might try just using satin/matt lacquer next time I spray a new neck.

Ok, find me a guitar...
- Short scale (24 (like a Jaguar) ideal but perhaps Gibson scale ok)
- Hard tail (no tremolo)
- Versatile: humbucker + single coil / or split coil options
- Pref to not have a bolt on neck but open to all options
- Lightweight!
- Any price
Can anyone think of anything other than a custom build?

Other than variations on Jaguars with humbuckers (but bolt on necks and in most cases not hard tail either), then I've found two:

Stretching the non bolt on neck part AND hard tail requirements (you could 'block' the trem though):

EDIT: The Ibanez is less than 24" as well.

Fabulous guitars!
A 335 is 24.75" scale length. Not a huge amount different, but I do notice when switching from my Jaguar to my SG or LP which are also 24.75" scale length compared to the Jaguar's 24". Not sure about the Ibanez though (the one I linked to was listed in mm and a quick conversion came in at a little over 22" I think).

I think that most of the specs are on the I Ibanez page:https://www.ibanez.com/eu/products/model/as/

A newish Les Paul Studio with split coils would fit the bill. It's a really easy thing to play and work with. Quite high output pickups though - great with overdrive. Alternatively a Jackson Dinky? Getting more expensive maybe look at a PRS.- Short scale (24 (like a Jaguar) ideal but perhaps Gibson scale ok)

As mentioned - the Gibson 335. It has a really good range of tones, in fact an exceptional range. I have one but it is old fashioned, unwieldy and isn't anywhere near as easy to play as an LP studio (I have one of these as well).

I'm left handed too, though play guitar and drums as right handed, which makes things easier/cheaper.
My mate plays a left hand kit, he’s right handed. He learned to play left handed as that is how his father’s kit was set up. His father is also right handed, when he bought his first kit as a youth, he didn’t know how to set it up, so copied the set up from a picture on the back of an album he had, that band did have a left handed drummer…Gassing Station | Music | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
