Not sure I'd say it's better than the original but Sinead doing House of the Rising Sun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aldbrau5sps

Tori Amos doing pretty well with a song that will never be better than in the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKIX7xyAN6M

I wouldn't say The Fine Young Cannibals' version of "Ever Fallen In Love" was better than the original, but it's one of those rare covers that's so different to the original that you almost forget it's a cover of something else.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68RRQNix6l0

And the, very different, original

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=terg_LPT3X0

I really like both versions!

Bit of a niche one here for fellow 90s indie fans, but Mark Morriss's (sic) cover of Teenage Fanclub's Alcoholiday is a belter. Morriss (yes, 2 esses) is the frontman of The Bluetones and has released some cracking solo material.

among many who have covered this :

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Jeff Healey Band

I love this version at the tribute to George Harrison, just brilliant.

I prefer this version by Tommy Emmanual's older brother Phil, massively talented Stuie French seated beside him

https://youtu.be/TXiMEO7RyNo

I have shared the stage quite a lot with Phil over the years and up close he is a frightening talent

Mentioning All Along The Watchtower, the Fratellis did a good version on the Radio One 40th anniversary album.
Randomly digging and came across this post, felt the need to highlight it- superb cover from a terrific band, long forgotten by most but never stopped making great music

ETA- between Jon Lawler/(Fratelli) trying it solo which wasn't bad but was never really as good

His cover of the Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" is fantastic

Not necessarily better than the originals, but I'm loving Finnish Bluegrass cover band "Steve'n'Seagulls" at the moment.
Their cover of Thunderstruck is great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Ao-iNPPUc&li...

Sadly there's not a decent copy of their cover of Rammstein's "Ik Will" on youtube, but it is on spotify.

I first heard this on Radio1 back when I listened to it.

It was the Mark & Lard afternoon show live from Robin Hood Bay. I'm pretty sure the live version with Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley on backing vocals went onto the CD single too. Where Fran Healey breaks into giggles in response to those BVs.

I'm fairly sure that the Radio1 Live Lounge was born out of Mark & Lard's live sessions.

I'm torn between this, and Hounds Of Love covered by Futureheads as my favourite covers. Then I get reminded of dozens of other great covers when I read through this thread and I'm not so sure. I love this one by Travis though. Great stuff.

You have jogged my memory, I have seen a video that includes Fran Healey laughing while perfor this but can't remember if I have it on a DVD or a computer. I didn't know that it was Mark and Lard doing the backing vocals. Thanks
I will have a listen to the Futureheads later, I can't get Youtube working at the moment due to a sluggish bandwidth problem

Quoted for funny typo that invokes the swear filter!

The key you seek is, quite literally...

..."a little to the left".

I think you meant to type "performing...

...but you stuck an "o" in there in place of the "i".

It just made me chuckle how the swear filter came straight in when it seems like an entirely innocent case of a miss-hit key, and a genuine 'typo' rather than a common speelong miss steak.
