Nightwish with Floor Jansen.
Don’t set me off.
Tarja was great but have to agree that Floor took them up a notch

Although personally I am more of a fan of Within Temptation and Sharon den Adel
I only agree with the original premise on the technicality that Floor didn't actually replace Tarja, she replaced Anette Olzen. Most of Nightwish's classic songs were written for Tarja's voice.

There's always a lot of love for Marillion on the forums. I've always thought of them as a second rate Genesis.
Anyone give me a couple of tracks which might change my mind? Or are they just a second rate Genesis and I was right?
This is one of the best things they've ever done IMO, Steve Hogarth's performance is amazing.

After two watches on my telly through a Sonos soundbar, nope I was right, second rate Genesis, not for me.
Perhaps it's time to get a decent stereo then........ wink

Never claimed to be an audiophile. The Sonos beam does me nicely.

Hooks in You and Assassin are more Rock than Prog Rock for me but i can kinda see your point and before anyone says they did loads more stuff, those are the two that spring to mind from a brief dig through the memory banks.

Assassin was with Fish singing and Hooks in You is with Steve Hogarth
I shall have a listen, thanks
Earliy Marillion is influenced by Genesis, Camel, Peter Hammill. Not a fan of Hooks in You and neither is the band by all accounts. If you want to listen to two pieces of music that highlight the best of both iterations then I'd go for the following.

Likewise , loved fish and the early stuff as a kid but from marbles onwards they have been sensational, their story telling is sublime.

See them in two weeks at the roundhouse, can’t wait.

Another vote for Deep Purple with Gillan and Glover, when they replaced Simper and Evans.

Will Ramos, joining any band but especially Lorna Shore, raised their profile to a whole other level.

Peak Marillion, for me, Margaret live at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Hogmanay 1983, absolutely phenomenal atmosphere.

For me an' my true-love, the drug squad as well on the bonnie, bonnie banks of loch lomond.'

It's personal taste and i was merely using it as an example of a song they've done that is more rock than prog rock smile

Pink Floyd are only remembered in the Gilmour incarnation, that's how much he added.
I actually think Pink Floyd are/were better without the massive ego that is Roger Waters.

I’ve just been looking at some liner notes and am now wondering if mentioning Rat Scabies joining Carroll and Payne on their reforming of the Members in 2010 would qualify as the most perversely literal-minded answer to the question? smile

There was a tension that was always there with Waters.

Animals is a masterpiece that uses that tension to it’s advantage.

By ‘The Wall’ cracks were showing.

I love ‘The Final Cut’ but it really is ‘…a Roger Waters album performed by Pink Floyd.’ As the liner note states.

IMHO ‘Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking’ is far Superior to ‘A momentary lapse of reason’ but Waters is still a prick. Just a prick who can weave a story & set it to music.

All this metal and prog! Ho hum.

Throwing something more pop into the mix

Duran Duran once Simon Le Bon joined.
(You can find early demos with Andy Wickett to illustrate my point.)

Hooverphonic with Noémie Wolfs. My favourite of the Belgian band’s revolving door of singers.

St Étienne with Sarah Cracknell. OK she joined after they had had just one song but still, it made the band a going concern.
