Funny how metal always seems to make non-fans sneer, but it's endured for what, cracking on for 40 years, assuming you take Blue Cheer as the starting point, and still attracts new fans. Look at Maiden as a case in point.

Sneer all they want, an undisputable fact is the best, non-classical musicians have all come from the metal/hard rock area.

Well I would dispute that. I would say that jazz and funk musicians would be at least as good if not better. It really depends on your definition of best.

Well clearly best in this instance is based on ability to grow hair and plug in a distortion pedal.

I grew up on rock n metal, all the usual suspects, Maiden, Metallica, KISS, Dio, Judas Priest, Ozzy, Purple etc.

Still like all the classics from the 70's n 80's.

However I find most modern equivalents are a bit dull, they seem to be less fun and they take themselves too seriously.

Maiden are still the best though!!

A few years ago I tried to compile my top 10 favourite songs of all time for a CD.

I tried and tried and this is as short as I could get the list ......

I posted this on the 'Idols' thread...

Metallica headlining Monsters of Rock at Donington in 1996 was quite special. Seen them a lot but that night was feeling pretty charged. The bands that year were a textbook lineup, for me at least.

The beginning of 'One' in the dark. Completely dark stage, apart from 10 minutes of gunfire, explosions, helicopters and war sounds, complete with flashing lights and fireworks. Then gradually the back of the stage faded up with a flickering red and amber light like fire, to reveal the sillhouette of Hetfield and his Gibson flying V, as he started playing the first bars.

Really special, absolutely magic.

Last 10 songs played on Winamp:

Pantera - Walk
Mudvayne - Happy?
Bush - Everything Zen
Def Leppard - Fractured Love
Faith No More - Epic
Default - Hiding From The Sun
Within Temptation - Pale
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
Linkin Park - Forgotten

Now playing : "Roses For The Dead" by Funeral For A Friend. Not all what I'd describe as particularly heavy, but it'll do for me.

I still have a leather jacket like that, with loads of deathmetal band names all over it hehe
I always HATED those denim and leather jackets, so come on who had one of those ?
My theory is if you had one of those, you still wear it.

Is anyone else here going to any of the Metal festivals in mainland europe? Anyone going to Graspop (www.graspop.be) or Waldrock (www.waldrock.nl)?

Supposed to be going to Graspop if my mates ever get money. Done Full Force in Germany last year. Way better than going to en English festival.

slayer, megadeth, machine head, sepultura, seen 'em all!
the only two bands who i have not seen and whom i would have love to have seen are pantera and biohazard. the bioharzard no holds barred album is absolutely awesome, by far the best live metal album i have heard.

Despite now being veggie the leather jacket in the picture is the only one of about 20 leather jackets I kept just for the memories!

Cheers Karen for posting the Phantom Blue link! I used to have a huge crush on their guitar player cloud9

Not sure I could live without these:

Slayer
Kyuss
Morbid Angel
Helmet
Babylon AD
Black Label Society
Machine Head
Biohazard
Pantera
Heather Nova...umm not exactly metal but still essential!

Look here everyone - it's all rather simple.

Just dig out your old Black Sabbath albums ..... Vol 4, Master of Reality, Sabotage, Black Sabbath, etc, etc, etc ......

It doesn't get any better than that.

If your into early sabbath give KYUSS a try....

Demon Cleaner is one of the best rock songs ever...

Aye, Kyuss are excellent but I think Electric Wizard are more in the same vein...sure noisier, heavier but definately influenced by Sabbath.

Check out their album Dopethrone

Metal has always been one of my favourite genres, thrash especially. Metallica, Megadeth, Testament etc...

I saw Metal: A Headbangers Journey
www.play.com/Music/MusicDVD/4-/3275782/Metal_A_Headbanger_Journey/Product.html
a couple of months ago and since then I've been digging out all my old albums. If you're into any form of metal at all you've got to see this film.

Jazz, as has been said before, is musical wanking. Funk is it's deformed half brother.

There is certainly some crossover though, many of the top musicians have certainly had metal/hard rock exposure.

I grew up on Sabbath, Zeppilin, FLoyd, King Crimson etc and once it's in your blood....

Saw Sabbath on the Sabotage tour, Rory Gallagher, UFO and others I've forgotten but now enjoy Rammstein and Tool with liberal doses of Muse
