Oh dear. Althought this type of music isn't my bag, I'll listen to owt if I've not heard it before, but Black Label Society ? Embarrasingly bad.

Last time I took time out to see any band in any way metalic was Orphaned Land, they're Israeli. You could give them a go.

Cor, they were supporting Heaven & Hell.
What was it my brother said as they started their last track of the night?
'Not really my thing but I'm warming to them. They kind of beat you into submission don't they?'

I saw them support Heaven & Hell, what a fking racket, absolutely terrible IMO.
yes

There was a whirl of people to our left that was rotating round and round when they were playing. Like a tornado inside the gig. Two birds next to us nudged each other and went over to join in. Never saw them again.

Weird and wonderful, and loud.

the music you could tolerate, or even understand other people liking it, however I just found their lead singer incredibly annoying. I'm in my 30's, I'm not impressed with swearing every second word, or being called a motherfker between every song.

I think you should watch Killadelphia... actually probably notwink. Randy (singer) is a cock-end and a drunk, but they're an awesome band. Their recorded stuff is incredible and the musicianship is second-to-none.

No one does better riffs than LOG at the moment. Go to the MySpace page and check out 'Laid to rest' and 'Walk With Me in Hell'. Heavy. The thing I love about LOG is that they've got that Death Metal song progression (ie, not verse, chorus, bridge, repeat) but they've got groove as well.

Arch Enemy are worth a look too.

Oh yeah, if you're looking for Metallica-type stuff give Train of Thought by Dream Theater a go. It is NOTHING like any of their other stuff and James Le Cheese does very little of the operatic singing stuff.

Slipknot are top drawer too - Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) is a good one to start with. It's easily their most 'mature' album.

I tend to like various songs rather than specific Korn albums. I prefer listening to their stuff when I'm angry, helps me calm down a bit.

Surprised no-one has mentioned Iced Earth, or even Iron Maiden.
Been going through a mega IE phase for the past 3 months or more - stonking stuff right the way back to their early albums.
Sevendust is worth a listen to, as well.

Somebody mentioned Slipknot.... great band and Vol 3 is awesome!
Lest we forget the mighty Stonesour,Corey Taylor's 'side project', they really do rock!
Both Stonesour (self titled) and Come Whatever May are excellent!

Megadeth's new one United Abominations is very good!

Enjoy!

Indeed i do like my metal and there are some good bands mentioned in this thread. But the OP asked for bands 'similiar' to Metallica, and i think that 95% of bands mentioned here are more just a list of people's favourite metal/heavy bands and not really bands of a similiar ilk to Metallica.

I am trying to wrack my brains, and i cannot honestly think of any band that sounds remarkably similiar to Metallica. OK, lots of decent heavy bands from around that time and more recent, but anything really like Metallica? I don't think there are (even Megadeth are different in so many ways), but happy to be proven wrong smile

Apologies if already mentioned, but Testament's The Formation of Damnation is an awesome album
