Christian Loffer and Henry Green - New Fires

According to Spotify it was my top tune of 2023 - which makes a nice change from it being The Wallflowers - One Headlight smile

Jus checked my Spotify wrap and while The Boxer Rebellion make my number one played artist, this apparently this is my most played song. Listening to it now...

Vedder has such an expressionful voice (I think I just made that word up but you know what I mean!).

I've gone down a rabbit hole now of other stuff EV has covered, and this, if you know and like the originals, is little short of spectacular: Love, Reign O'er Me and The Real Me:

Special mention to the bass player on The Real Me too, and for the little Townsend touch at the end hehe

(Can't post it as a YT link as there's some sort of copyright on it)

I'd agree with that. With regard to outros, I first saw TP&TH live at Oxford Polytechnic in March 1980. I was on the staff and had been asked if I'd mind staying behind to assist/monitor the students who attended gigs in the main entrance hall. I'd been given their new LP for Xmas so obviously then being the same age as Petty and Campbell I jumped at the chance, it was the group's first UK Tour for that LP 'Damn The Torpedoes' - which if I recall was only at Manchester Apollo and a couple nights at Hammersmith Odeon.

The gig at Oxford was added as part of the 'Rock Goes To College' TV series. Sod standing near the doors I headed straight to the front of the stage with the students. Fantastic evening. With original drummer Stan Lynch before Steve Ferrone took his place over a decade later.

above: Refugee (orig version) live at Oxford Poly

I loved what they did to the end of Refugee with Campbell and Petty doing an extended added guitar finale, which was not on the original single nor the LP like this, but they always played it on stage in the years after with the added outro.

I was also lucky enough to see them on the Isle of Wight in 2012 (vid above, they'd perfected 'Refugee' by then, fking amazing band at this point with Petty showing what an outstanding guitarist he was too) and lastly attend the Hyde Park concert in July 2017, with the bonus of Stevie Nicks as well, just a couple months before Tom passed away.

TP&TH - Superb band from day one to the very end.

Absolute Radio this morning about 7.45 mentioned a song that was on the ban list, the song "Party Hard" by Andrew WK.

I hadn't heard the song for years so I had a quick Google to see what I could find.

Song in question.

Harp - Throne of Amber. The band is Tim Smith, singer/writer with Midlake & his wife. He’s doing music rooted in the 80’s & I likes it ! There’s The Cure & The Cocteau Twins in there for sure.

Attack of the Grey Lantern was an epic album. Worth looking out some of PD's more recent stuff, it's (IMO) patchy but the good bits are very good. His stuff with Steven Wilson is worth a listen too.
