The original is excellent, standing well above the typical "US sci-fi B movies" of the time (Forbidden Planet and Invasion of the body snatchers being the other two examples of good US sci-fi from that period).

I do not understand why it was felt necessary to remake it, it wont tempt me to the cinema.
Aye, I had shamefully forgotten Forbidden Planet! SUPERB film.

Emergency Cancellation Archimedes.

And am I weird to fine Anne Francis hot in it?
DTESS and FP are superb!

...and as to Anne Francis, she was one of the prettiest women in Hollywood at the time and she looks fabulous in the movie. Hot as Hell itself.

If the new version is about enviro-claptrap and US gung-ho then I won't go.

The original was discrete and full of pathos, the latest version sounds brash and crass and that kills any incentive to go and taint my memory of the original.

Okay, those were all good examples. For the record Pearl harbor was aching to sit through, I was dragged by an Ex at the time. Independence Day was pretty good, a bit cheesy, but entertaining. smile

I thought the clever bit IMO is where/how Klaatu came in being but GORT was underused and the ending was rather abrupt.
