My Friends little brother has recently had the infamous YLOD. Within 2 seconds of firing it up, the yellow light shows then the red light flashes until the console is switched off.

I want to try and help him as much as I can so was wondering what options are available to try and fix it.

Would putting his HD in my PS3 cause mine any problems? The minimum I want to try and do is make a backup of his game save data.

Thanks

Do not put his hard drive in your ps3 it will be formatted.

If he wants data from the hard drive he's going to have to get the console repaired otherwise it's all lost and he needs a new one.

Phew, thanks for that.

Are there any recommended places for repairing them or is it just a google search.

I can tell you your options as I recently had to do the same thing for my brother. (his original 60GB PS3 got YLOD).

In terms of the data on the PS3, there is only 1 thing you can do. Open it up, and reflow/resolder the joints. Put it back together again, and if it works, while its switched on, backup all the save data/files he needs. There are lots of instructions online on how to do this. Or you could find an independant shop to get it repaired/working there.

If that doesn't work, then his data is gone forever. every HDD is encrypted to its respective console. taking the HDD and putting it into another PS3 will only force-prompt a reformat so that it can be used on the new PS3. Currently, nobody has found a way of plugging the HDD up to a PC and backing it up that way.

To get the PS3 'repaired' would cost £134 from sony. I will say 'repaired' because they never really repair your system and return it back to you. How it works is a courier will come round the next day to take your broken PS3, and at the same time, give you a refurbished PS3 of the same model. These come with just a 6month warranty. If you happen to have a game/disc inside the PS3 at the time of YLOD (and are unable to get it out), tell them this over the phone. THey'll tell you it will take up to 6weeks for that disc to be sent back to you.

and then of course.. there's always buying another PS3..

How about these guys? http://ps-pros.co.uk/index.html £69 for a ylod repair and it's guaranteed. Also unless it's an HD failure they claim no data will be lost.

well, the only way any data can be accessed is if the PS3 that the HDD was used on is working. all HDD's are encrypted and tagged to the PS3 that they use. By all means, if the data means alot, then its worth getting someone who knows their stuff to try and fix it. There is no guaranteeing how long one of those repairs would keep the console alive for though. I assume he has one of the very first PS3s? (as these are the ones that get YLOD issues)

Yep it's a "fat" console (as is mine whistle) These people do guarantee it for 90 days so the bare minimum he'll be able to do is back up his data for when and if it dies again.

Are his game saves really worth £70 though? Seems a lot to me.

Instead of what? Buying a new console?

You said above that you only get a 90 day guarantee on the repair and it sounds like it's going to die again in the not too distant future; hence he's ultimately paying £70 just to retrieve the game-saves.

I was only asking if this was worth the money, surely it's more economical to buy a new machine, plus he'll probably enjoy playing all of his old games from the start?
